You're correct, I think of the standard card machine the clerks use as part of a point-of-sale system, and related my own experiences with those. But it is primarily an issue with unattended machines, exactly as you note, especially gas pumps. Had that issue myself returning a rental car and unable to get gas for it.

and chip-or-no-chip don't enter into it. They want French cards. I have tried to operate these machines with credit cards issued in the UK, in Germany, and in Luxembourg, respectively, all with chip and PIN. Didn't work (and in Calais, there's a lot of signs warnign UK motorists about the issue). They did work on the motorway toll booths and the Paris Metro ticket machines, but w/o any security whatsoever, i.e. card in - card out - barriers open / tickets dispensed - no PIN, no signature, no nothing. Strange.

I was referring to the unattended terminals (which I think the OP was talking about), but you're quite right about employees that don't understand their machines.

I've talked quite a few of them through the process of "gliding" US cards.

You're fortunate they were willing to learn! I had at least five encounters in which they had no interest in my non-chipped card whatsoever, and went to the "trouble" of plugging it in like it had a chip and giving me a dumb stare... as if they hadn't encountered this ever before. You would think the powers-that-be at M/C and Visa would crack down on this. As I said previously, it's a requirement that they take such cards when the merchants sign their contracts.

It was frustrating trying to use my AMEX and VISA cards at a French post office after buying some gifts with one of those cards, both were declined trying to mail them to the US.

Never got either one of them to work, had to pay cash.

The French post office could have a forum to themselves. Particularly the banking section. I once had an incident where they didn't want to give me money from my own account (which was on the account in good standing) although I had three pieces of ID with me. I made a huge scandal in the post office and stayed for more than half an hour. Finally I threatened to call the police. It was pretty dramatic. But that did the trick, I got my money.

French postal money operations are even more surreal than German telecom operations and those are pretty bad already.
