Coping with Paris under a sweltering sky

It was 1 p.m. on our first full day in Paris, the temperature was approaching 104 degrees, and we had already established a pattern that would hold for our eight-day visit: Cherchez le shade.

Thanks for posting this link - good article. Thankfully, I left town on the 12th for two weeks - it was really, really hot.

I read that article in the Chicago Tribune also since the LA Times is now a Tribune newspapaper.

I have another friend who lives in Paris who was somehow able to buy a fan during this period. She said, "It changed my life!" Whoever it was that said, "Paris is always a good idea" may not have been right 100% of the time.

I have maintained for many years that the three greatest inventions ever are the wheel, contact lenses and air conditioning - not necessarily in that order!

Can't read the article but I was in Paris from Aug 3 to 8. Under the Eiffel tower near the bird salesman and miniature Eiffel tower salesmen, the price of a bottle of water was 1 euro, the price of a bottle of frozen water was 2 euros. Business for the ice was brisk to say the least.

Luckily in May I had asked the owner of the apartment I was renting if she had a fan. She said she didn't but when we arrived (the day before the heat started) she had a brand new one there. Nice. At night, we put frozen plastic bottles of water in front of the fan and it helped (yeah, right), but the kids kept stealing the fan. I guess we needed two.

I will be in Paris July 11-18 this year. How bad is it likely to be?

No way to tell of course, but last year was very unusual. I was there at the end of July and it was pretty pleasant. Warm, but not too hot. It got nasty after that. I have been there before in August and it was fine. Wont know until then Im afraid.

Churches are always havens of cool when it's sweltering. I find this works in many countries...

The summer of 2003 was rather unusual (satellite image). Hoping we won't get a repeat.
