This means that AY loses their biggest advantage (as far as well-paying customers are concerned): one-stop connections between secondary cities. If you want to fly from Continental Europe to Australia, chances are your airport offers flights to BKK, HKG, SIN, DOH or DXB, and from these airports you can continue nonstop to several Australian cities. Why fly via HEL and CAN?
Other than that, AY already offers codeshares to Australia from other airports in Asia which you can use if you wish to fly on Finnair.

While 2-stop might discourage some, the distance via HEL to ANZ is surprisingly short .

For intsance, A LHR-HEL-CAN-SYD is only 0,2% longer than the shortest GC-distance!
Great Circle Mapper

The LHR-DXB-SYD is 3% longer!

FWIW, it's been said that Australia is Finnair's biggest market that it doesn't actually fly too.
