I found the answer here. AA needs to be booked offline:
You can book British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Iberia, Japan Airlines, Qantas and Qatar Airways flights directly through our website's booking engine or by clicking the airline name below and choosing Book award flights. To book award flights with other airlines, please contact us via our Chat service on the bottom right corner or call our customer service. The easiest and fastest way to contact us is via chat on the bottom right corner.

Question Why can't Finnair see the award seats on American Airlines?

I'm trying to book an award trip between Canada and USA on AA, using my Finnair avios. I've found seats on specific flights using British Airways oneworld search. Also American Airlines award engine and Qantas award engine show these flights available as standard rewards. However when I call AY they see no award seats on these flights although the 3 separate sources say they are available. I also tried chat who could see availability for some but not for all.

Is this a common problem here? Is Finnair blocking award seats on AA? Or is AA limiting seats available to AY? Is it T-class that should be booked on AA (AY agents say they are looking for availability in T)?

I was also told that they were only allowed to book what came up in the system. So me having found no availability YYZ-LAX (none available) but YYZ-ORD-MCI-PHX-LAX was not allowed to book that as they were allowed only to search YYZ-LAX, not YYZ-MCI, MCI-LAX.

Would like to push the return of a long-haul U award back by a few days. Although J9+, no current U availability and must waitlist. Of course I know YMMV, but how likely might this clear, and is this waitlist/process different from Y to J upgrade waitlist? I know waitlists are checked at multiple intervals, but nowadays mostly seem to clear at T37h or under. Confirmation at T37h would, of course, be too late, as my original flight would be long gone by then (with me on it). I am just wondering if it is possible that award date change vs Y to J upgrades might be handled differently, since a last-minute date change is most likely rarely useful for many? I guess I am thinking of a situation where in the end there would be U space at T37h for the proposed date and thus I could have changed the dates, but this space would not be there yet by the time of my original flight.

Ideally, it would be confirmed ASAP, since I will have domestic travel with itineraries that will depend on the return date, but I know I have to be realistic...

Is there a way to book direct BKK-HEL or HEL-BKK PE/J on anything else but AY's own website? BA and QR only pulls up the DOH connections and when I was celebrating the fact I should be able to move my Avios from BA/QR to AY it seems like that won't be possible for a few months.
