Background
From time to time, AY will make the Y traveller an offer to upgrade. This thread lists when, how and and how much the upgrade is.

Selection process is unknown, but it is likely that neither fare class on original ticket nor tier status of traveller is a selection criteria, at least not to travellers advantage. From the reports made so far, both travellers with and without FF# in the reservation have gotten offers.

Offers are likely made only when Y is oversold or nearly full. Some travellers have reported declining offer and being upgraded for free later ("op-up").

Offers are fixed price offers, either in € or in AY+points. The latter kind is only valid for members of AY+, while €-offers are directed to all kind of travellers.

Offers are made either in mail or via text message and recipient has 72 hours to repspond. Some reports says this time is now shortened to 48 hours. Text message offers typically arrive close to departure and may not state a last time to reply.

Offers in text message can be replied to and upgrade is instantly processed. Offers in mail has occasionally not cleared (said to be "sold out" when accepting offer too late).

If offer is accepted and upgrade clears, new ticket is issued in F, so a confirmed upgrade with all perks of business class included. Mileage earning is according to original fare class however.

Development
In august 2015 AY announced a trial to let travellers bid for upgrades, initially on AY89 and AY90. It is likely that bidding will affect the number of fixed price offers.

The trial has been made permanent, and the bidding for upgrade has been extended to more longhaul routes.
The program has also led to a consolidation of upgrade options to one webpage
https://www.finnair.com/int/gb/upgrade-options
where you can upgrade by bidding, by using AY+ points or by accepting last minute cash offers. The latter ("Last minute" offers) are the same as have been discussed in this thread.. Finnair still pushes those offers via e-mail and text-message, but now also shows them on this webpage.

Forgive me if this isn't correct thread for upgrade offers, I couldn't find any better.

I just got a PE upgrade for SIN-HEL for 140 EUR. I think is quite affordable given the length of the route. I flew with KLM in October from SJO to AMS and upgrade from economy to their PE was back then over 300 EUR.

  • City-pair and/or flight number: HEL - HKT
  • Price offered: op-ups PE to J
  • Flight date: middle March, 2024
  • FF tier on reservation: AY basic newly joined, 2 pax on the pnr
  • Original ticket type: PE classic
  • How the offer was made: At the boarding gate

Friends came to Phuket and I advised them to get AY status beforehand, and at least buy PE to make the long journey more tolerable. It turned out to be a pleasant surprise at the gate. They never fly in J on long haul before. Now they think J totally worth extra money and they love the AY J seat! And they would try to get (cash) upgrade to J in the future 😂

Does anyone know the points situation on such upgrades?

I upgraded from PE to J at the airport for £300 (BKK - HEL). The sign with the offer only said it would not include luggage or lounge access and nothing about a restriction for points. I just received the points on my account and I received PE tier points and not J, it’s also showing as a PE flight.

This is the way it is supposed to work on AY. Upgrades only come with points for the original class paid.

For old reservations this is how it has infortunately allways worked, I would imagine going forward they would issue the points for the new spend but who knows...

I still say its total BS that no lounge or luggage is included in airport upgrades 🤷‍♂️👎

I think 69 EUR is the new norm. I had the same "offer" for WRO and CPH via app.

For a non-status member, that is actually a reasonable price. You get a bag, lounge access and a free seat. The on-board meal is hardly worth more than a few euros, but free-flowing drinks are a valuable perk if one is a drinker.

Also got 69-70 EUR offer on HEL GVA HEL. Even if it was free, I don't even know if I would take it: AY platinum, free emergency exit, usually the adjacent seat is free, and one gin tonic onboard is enough for me.
