It is enough to move up to become second largest owner of the company (close to 6% of FIA1S). Not that airlines are investments.

Its easy, I got some real good deals on AY, so I always make a minimum of flights on AY to keep this option alive. Specialy since I like their seats on the A330. If those flights give bring me close to Platinum, I go for the extra points.

And TG not always have the special offers.

Just on a related note, has anyone on this board flown Finnair in F when they still had that cabin? Have heard some rumours about TATL and Tokyo flights with caviar, French classic cuisine and and a proper first lounge at HEL.

Here are some facts from AY history: http://www.finnairgroup.com/group/group_14_6.html

As long as I recall (since late 1970´s) there has not been first class service on Finnair flights, at least in three class configuration. The better one may have been called "First Class" initially, later "Executive Class", and "Business Class" nowadays. The lounges appeared to the smallish HEL airport by the time AY Plus was founded. Gold was the highest tier then and had its own lounge apart from Business class lounge. I do not remember if Silver card holders had lounge access those days. Before joining OW, Finnair used to have close co-operation with the QualiFlyer (Austrian, Sabena, Swissair, Crossair... etc.) and later with Lufthansa.

Yes, from how they worded the facts, it seems that at least during the period 1960-1974 J was labled "First".
The caravelle:
The seating layout in the Finnair version was initially for 16 first class and 57 economy class passengers.
DC8:
On 1 January 1966, Finnair opened an office in New York. In November, the company placed orders for two Douglas DC-8-62CF aircraft. This was a four-engine jet, designed for exceptionally long-range flights. The normal route version carried 16 first-class and 124 economy-class passengers.
The caravelle flew until 1983, not sure when the DC-8 went out of service.

Then again (even shown by recent "enhancements") it is not the name of the cabin that makes the class, it is what service they offer. Those "First" cabins may very well have been receiving very good service, even though we may laugh at the seats by modern standard. In those days flying was true luxury.

Luckily not all airlines are like Finnair, commercial F flying is still very much luxury with the finest airlines in the world.

Though my experience in F is limited to 2 segments on KE A380, AY J for me now has the look&feel of a Y-service with a slightly better seat.

It is silly easy to get accustomed to F service. I wish it was as easy to get used to the bill...

Tell me about it... After 3 F longhaul segments in LX F, all C cabins look poor... not to mention C lounges after the ZRH F lounge

(and I don't even dare to think about the mystical territory that some people say exists behind the curtain )

I'm pretty sure that Tokyo flights were the last flights with a genuine first class in the late 80´s or early 90's in a three class version.

I remember that when most airlines had economy and business class in European service, Lufthansa had First and Business class but no tourist class. Even Austrian had quite late a short haul first class.
