Of course you are free to your opinion, but to judge content based on the author's picture is a statement about the superficiality of our social media age. The author is a solid active member of FlyerTalk and has been for many years. I know his picture was discussed a few years back; I tried to find the specific post without success. I did find some active conversation about his blog in 2015. I remember Brian coming on here and good naturedly explaining why he uses that head shot. I find it unattractive to be dismissive of his work while freely admitting no knowledge of it.

It has absolutely nothing to do with me liking the photo or not. Maybe I wasn't clear in how I laid out my thoughts/opinion. It subconsciously screams out that the blog is about him and not about the content. Whether it was his intention or not, it screams of the cult personality and all flash no substance of today's culture. The first time I saw the photo and blog title, I googled the guy's name as I was sure he had to be famous for some other reason outside of the blog. Why else would a cheesy 90's glamour shot take up half of the blog's logo, and why is his name in the title?

The Gate used to be an IB property when it was hosted on FlyerTalk. When it moved back to BoardingArea it made perfect sense for Brian to put his name on it since it used to have a few co-authors. Not uncommon at all.

Talk about a reach. Of all the things to throw into the I Hate BoardingArea And Everything They Do Is Awful Echo Chamber you decided to throw in a blogger who has been in this space for 10 years, was a mod here for a long time, doesn't pack his posts with credit card affiliate links, and is widely acknowledged as one of the nicest and most sincere guys in the points and miles space just because his face and name are in his logo? I mean come on.

Come on! How dare you express your honest feelings about someone's commercial product because other people deem him beyond reproach?

This wasn't a personal attack. You guys in *defending* are turning this into a personal issue. Someone said he's turned off by a graphic. Get off the moral high horse. If you don't agree, move on. Of all the things to throw in the "this forum is full of haters of BA" echo chamber....

And now it actually is broken. On mobile you get big black boxes and scrolling down you cannot see most posts and it keeps repeating itself (posts)

Why does frequentbusinesstraveler pop up so frequently? How is this a blog?

Wow it's almost like flooding the internet garbage content paid for by credit card companies and travel providers leads to a lot of clicks!!!

Dramatic newsletters from the HOM this week:

- long term ad revenue will be down 50-75%
- traffic up 50% YoY, revenue down 75%
- 25k $ welfare fund set up to help bloggers who have staff and overheads

The section of boarding area that was depending purely on the ad revenue hand down to run the show will probably realize that the effort to blog will not be renumerated with cash... so if they don't have any other sources of income (CC comission, affliate links to points.com travel or shoppings portal, etc) blogging will stop. The award booking gigs will probably suffer a looong dry spell...

And, there will be more than a few (myself included) who will continue to blog because they enjoy it. You buried the lede, that Randy is putting up his own money to help bloggers. Which shouldn't surprise anyone that knows Randy.

Moderator Standards?

I was alerted to this thread by another member of FlyerTalk, and I'm glad for it. there's two things that this particular post deserve: 1/ a question about Moderator Standards; 2/ truth in posting.
1/ in the founding of the volunteer Moderators corps, it was always a goal that a certain standard of behavior would be on display by Moderators when within a forum that they moderated. If I were still around, I would immediately suspend this moderator from his volunteer responsibilities. A moderator should never republish information given to them that they know is private and certainly not intended for them. That is not a Moderator standard. Members of FlyerTalk have to know that they can trust a moderator to have good judgement. I would say that even without this being a Moderator standard issue, it is not considered #cool to republish content that was redirected to someone in confidence. But I get it, maybe standards have changed. I would call on the management of FlyerTalk to review what their current standards are for moderators and if deemed worthy, take some action here. Bottom line: members have to know they can trust a Moderator and i do hope that has not changed.
(** for the record, I'm a big fan of Oliver and credit him as the co-founder of the popular MegaDo's. For those who may not know, the original MegaDo was floundering and did not appear to be able to sell. Oliver who was working with Tommy777 at the time to launch the idea approached me for help and I offered it unconditionally with the advent of the popular MegaDo thread contests and giveaways. It has always been clear to me that Oliver deserved a lot of credit for their success. (sort of the Scottie Pippen of the Chicago Bulls success story for you sports fans). the point being, it's not about Oliver, it's about the standards of Moderators.)

2/ I find it very disturbing that this Moderator chose to misrepresent what was said. For instance, nowhere in my Note do i say that revenue was down 75%? Actually, I note that while the landscape of advertising could portray a possible scenario of such, the actual damage of revenue on the network was far less. And I don't even say that "long term ad revenue will be down 50-75%" ... I note two-four months which is hardly long term. How could Oliver decide to misrepresent what was actually said? Very poor form to have posted it and very poor form to misrepresent it as well.
And Oliver goes on to misrepresent another fact. There is my personal effort to keep blogging dreams alive with "food, shelter and medical costs". if needed How is that confused with "staff and overheads" Staff? Clearly a misrepresentation of the facts and certainly the intent.

How can the members of FlyerTalk rely on this truly great resource when a Moderator can't be trusted and when they (a moderator) post and misrepresent the facts? I'm very sorry to see this and do know that it is really just the behavior of a single member, but all members deserve better.

I'm not mad, just disappointed. And since it's already been "recapped" here, I'll post what I published and let the members try and find the "revenue down 75%" and "staff" that Oliver references. #standardsmatter

I just posted what a BArea blogger sent me via whatsapp. If you never said any of that then I stand corrected. :o
