It really is sad that clueless blogs like DP are "featured" while other bloggers don't get the same billing. For a while there even FM was trumped.

ma91pmh Dec 28, 2013 3:57 pm

You guys should vote with your eyes and mind and just stop reading... I gave up on BA long ago and now sub to a very small number of their blogs through feedly. And I am surprised that some - contributing here ;) - continue to post there. I don't think I'd want to be associated with most of the other bloggers there.

In fact some of the BA blogs not mentioned by smb12 do get 'featured' status for about 2 weeks per year. My slot is coming up soon.

gpapadop Dec 29, 2013 8:32 am

Excuse me, this may be a dumb question that may have been answered earlier or elsewhere. What does it take to be in the "featured blogger" area of BA? Obviously, moderation practices is not one of the criteria :D

By the way, I had a fantastic time at the buffet line this morning at the Hyatt property in Thessaloniki, Greece. I think I am all set for food for the rest of the day!

I was "invited" by BA management. AFAIK that's the criteria, similar to how one gets in to BA in general.

I wouldn't be surprised if there was a cluster benefit for all the BA bloggers -- including even the better ones -- by being associated in this way and more easily accessible/discovered.

I think that Randy Petersen (or whoever set up BA) played that very well, and I appreciate the concentration as a user.

I hear you. Personally I read all blogs through feedly and so filter out the crap from boardingarea, first2board etc that i do not want to read.

i track some bad ones for comedic purposes, but some get so nauseating you have to turn off the tap

actually i don't have ba on feedly either (just individual ba blogs) but then that's cuz the blog posts are excerpts :p

HikerT Jan 12, 2014 2:52 pm

I've noticed I am getting a "Your comment is awaiting moderation" now when I comment on BoardingArea. Nothing in my comments that would warrant holding back a post for moderation (such as a link). Spillover effect from being censored by other blogs on BA?

That setting is managed on a per-blogger basis; it is not something which can "spill over" between the blogs.

HikerT Jan 12, 2014 6:10 pm

This is on both Ben and Gary's blogs. I am pretty sure neither hold back comments for moderation.

they do if it's from a new email address. i changed my email recently and noticed the same, the usual people let them through. still waiting for my post on milevalue pointing out the $150 sign up for discover to go through though

HikerT Jan 12, 2014 6:28 pm

Not a new email. I suspect either the email or IP is flagged. No reason for either to be flagged.

wait and see. IIRC this is not your first bout of paranoia on this thread

HikerT Jan 12, 2014 7:09 pm

Wait and see for what? I'm not paranoid. Just wondering why comments would be held for moderation on either of those blogs.

sbm12 Jan 12, 2014 7:40 pm

These are the general options available within wordpress:

http://gallery.millerworks.net/photo...-RDLKW9b-L.jpg

Names and keywords can also be blacklisted natively but IP addresses cannot be.

There are other plug-ins which can blacklist IP addresses or usernames but, IME, those don't show the user that it is held for moderation; they just get dropped.

It is also possible that some combination of the words used tripped up the anti-spam filter. I found one of those today in my queue and I have no idea what made that trigger but it did. Not all the bloggers bother examining the spam queue very closely as, depending on the blog, it can be hundreds to thousands of messages daily.

Raffles Jan 13, 2014 3:14 am

I don't examine my spam queue at all - better things to do than trawl through 300 viagra plugs each day looking for a comment by someone who for some reason used the word viagra in a genuine comment .....!

That's fine as long as the spam filter is halfway intelligent. Travel-related blogs need to allow the otherwise dodgy "XXX", for example -- not just because grateful readers might sign their comments with three kisses, but also to allow for routings along the lines of LHR-XXX-LAX.

Good job most of us don't regularly travel through Gamarra airport in Colombia -- via GRA. ;)

Delta Points has got to be the worse when it comes to censoring.
I commented on the Sunday fireside chats which appear to be copied from MMS interview series and got Censored!!!
I merely stated that MMS had interviewed most of the bloggers already so there was no need to repeat the process

DP is indeed - though he's actually proud of that fact, oddly. You're right about the interviews though. This seems to be the latest fad for the bloggers to create filler is to interview one another. Or as I call it, the Blogger Self-Appreciation Society.;)

Why so angry DP?
Its like the kid at the playground that takes the ball home if he doesn't like the game.
The rising readership must be due to the "quality" merchandise on Swag saturdays.

Thankfully he stopped editing his name out of the wiki anytime someone listed DP as one that censors comments.

In one of your twitter posts, you mentioned that you get as much as 900 spam comments a day. https://twitter.com/DeltaPoints/stat...7747385851905/

Are you sure all those hits necessarily mean huge and amazing growth? I'm not trying to criticize. Just curious.:)

In this post yugi reports that TheMilesProfessor has "often" removed comments that could lead readers to links that are better (for them) than her referral links. (The post appears in a thread about her deleting one of her blog posts.)

View From the Wing does censor after all. :(

ma91pmh Aug 25, 2014 10:09 am

I read elsewhere that the Ken comments were particularly vicious, not sure this is the kind of censoring us freedom of speech libs care about.

That said I censor VFTW, stopped reading that Chase advertising drivel a long time ago.

84fiero Aug 25, 2014 10:31 am

I wonder what Ken's comment was - anybody happen to catch it? If he is just spouting off vicious stuff or some sort of personal attacks, I wouldn't blame a blog for trying to block him. That's a little different from censoring normal, civil comments that point out contrary information, better links, etc.

HikerT Aug 25, 2014 11:50 am

I'm not surprised Gary nuked the comments. They were a bit over the top. I thought the dim sum comment was kinda funny.

Ken said,

And for the record, YOU STILL SUCK!

I don’t know what’s gotten into you lately, but IT’S HORRIBLE!

Those 2-3 pennies you get per hit is not going to last for long.

Retire already!!!!!!

-----
Ken said,

I’ll say it again, you are not original!

See what happens when you come up with your own material. IT’S A FAILURE!

Everybody’s knows you intentions now! HA HA I TOLD YOU SO!

Just go back to copying Lucky, it was better then.

-----
Ken said,

Just spend some quality time with your wife instead of writing some stupid s*it all the time.

Or better yet, GO EXERCISE! You’ve eaten too many Pad Thai’s lately being a food critic.

-----
Ken said,

Can’t wait to meet you face to face in Chicago. I won’t be hiding!

CREAMPIE HERE WE COME!!!!

-----
Ken said,

I thought you banned me???

You put me back on to get sympathy again from your readers?

Good luck with that. You SUCK!

Spend time with the Wife, exercise and work hard in your day job. Do all of us a favor and stop blogging. Your time has expired!!!!

-----
Ken said,

I bet you regret posting your ugly face now!!!

BTW, I talked to the manger of the chili place you insulted lately and they are not happy with you. I emailed them a screenshot of your face and they are looking out for you.

-----
Ken said,

Maybe you should get a spray ran. It might hide the quadruple chin of yours.

HA HA!!!!!!!!!

-----
Ken said,

I just recently flew CX F and your face looked like a piece of Dim Sum I got on the flight.

I had to cover it with chili sauce just to eat it.

I bet somebody knows what I’m talking about.

-----
Ken said,

Maybe I should stop.

NOT!!!!

I have a picture of you in my office with, “And for the record” in front of it.

And for the record, YOU SUCK!!!!

-----
Ken said,

Why is it I don’t see you correcting people anymore with “and for the record” anymore????

Maybe, cause YOU SUCK!!!

-----
Ken said,

Ok Ok! We all know the creampie in Chicago will not happen.

All you had to do was to prove me wrong from the beginning and you would of came out ahead. Instead, you ban me and not publish the truth.

You’ve been blogging for 10+ years and didn’t even try to prove me wrong.

You know I’m right, that’s why!

I’m glad I got to wake up some of your readers. It might not affect you now, but you’ll see it soon.

I don’t even have to make comments, you are destroying yourself!!!!

-----
Ken said,

Ok, you stop copying Lucky since I called you out on it, and now your content SUCKS!

I know everybody has to make a living, BUT COME ON MAN!!! I would of thought you would of stepped up your game a little bit just because of it. BUT, you haven’t. You’ve proven me right 100X already.

I would live to debate you online.

Gary, please prove me wrong!!!!!!!

That's why I called it out, but didn't change the wiki...yet.

Based on HikerT's transcripts, I understand why Gary censors it...but that's still censorship. It's not spam or profane. It's 'just' rude and mean. In a truly free marketplace of ideas Ken's posts would be free to be made...and judged as mostly meritless.
