I thought the reasons were:

1 - traffic rights difficult to obtain because of political reasons

2 - when traffic is obtained, it is usually a single carrier right (e.g. BR got LON/PAR/VIE and CI got FRA/ZRH/ROM - for years, only AMS was served by both carriers - now VIE also)

3 - no demand - especially passenger - people in Taiwan migrate mostly to US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and now Mainland China - Europe is mostly for limited business travellers and tourists

4 - geography - Taiwan is closer to North America so it makes it a good transfer point for SE Asia cities. It does not have that advantage for European flights - it is really the "last stop" in Asia if you come from Europe.

I say BKK is a big hit is referring to their BKK-Europe sector. It has always been a cash-cow for both of them with a stop in BKK.

The eco deluxe I think is being lost by BR as its too old and the new fittings will be charged at much more than current prices and you can get biz class with CI for the same.

EVA was suppose to get FCO rights as it "represented" Taiwan to discuss bilateral air service in the early 90s. But at the end Taiwanese Gov't give the rights to CI.

Jim,

Thanks for the update. I called to buy a ticket several weeks ago and found out the B773ER was running the TPE-BKK-TPE route in August. I got a C ticket for the Premium Laurel and planned a trip report.

seats are really comfy and service is really good. I must write a trip report one of these days. The last 4 trips I have slept for about 8 hours on the AMS BKK AMS legs

I guess I should have mentioned I've flown in Premium Laurel on the A332. I really liked it! I did a trip report (October 2004) on that trip. I'm sure the B773ER cabin will be similar, though.

ED seat layout on 777

Frankly I'm not particularly excited about the 777s - I'm very happy with deluxe on the 747s. I got back to London last night and my flight back to Taipei in about 2 weeks will probably be the last time in deluxe on the 747 London route (unless I get upgraded in which case I've already had my last deluxe flight on that route).

What I like most is the seats in the nose... there are several better leg room (nothing in front). Eg 27c/h, 27d/g, 26d/g, 24 d/g (table in front). I usually go for 27C. I think they are blocked for gold/diamond members (I'm gold) and I never have a problem getting one, except on the odd occasion they've switched planes.

I suppose with these new 777s with Premium Laurel in the front, there won't be any of these "special" seats, except maybe a single exit row... does anyone know?

Of course on the occasions I get upgraded I will be upgraded to a better business class. But if there are more economy/deluxe seats (I think there are compared with the 747combos) then upgrades will be rarer.

I think there will be fewer ED seats in the 777s so the chance of upgraded from ED to C is higher.

The plane looks cool. Thanks for the picture. I guess they are only painting the huge 777-300ER for the first plane - I hope.

** Edited "fewer C" to "fewer ED"

I believe you meant there are fewer ED seats on the 777s. I guess upgrades from C to F will become impossible.

Looks like 772LR Passenger version survived the uncertainty according to Taiwanese media reports. It didn't say the airline plans to convert 772LR to 772LRF, but separately reported EVA is set to order 10+ 777-200LR, this time freighter version, to replace 747-400F and MD-11F between 2009-2014.

They are starting to promote the 777s. Both mainly in Chinese but still interesting to look even if you can't read Chinese:

http://evaair.themecool.com.tw/777-300er/index.html

http://www.evaair.com/html/b2c/Chine...1;擎.htm - they had a news conference introducing the engine and it goes on and on about how reliable it is
