Layover in Amsterdam

If the email I received from KLM is correct, my 5 hour layover in Amsterdam (route is IAD-AMS-EDI) has been increased to 7 hours.

Is this enough time to actually leave the airport and do something?

If I do leave, will I be given a hard time when I come back through security and don't have any luggage with me, aside from my camera bag?

This thread from the Europe forum may help: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/europ...amsterdam.html

Yes, time to leave airport (easy to get into town) and no, why should they worry about amount of luggage anyway at security any more than any other airport?

I think that is plenty of time.
I had a layover similiar. There was enough time to store luggage in a locker and hop on the train into the city center. Hop on a bus tour of the city and a canal ride and be back for my flightin plenty of time.

20 minutes by train to downtown. Don't waste your whole time at the airport.

Or..take the train the other direction to the town of Leydan and check out the interesting windmill that is also a museum you can walk through (lots of stairs).

In my opinion, 4 or 5 hours is enough to most of the bigger tourist attractions in Amsterdam. Maybe (more like probably) when I've been too busy enjoying the nightlife to really explore, but you can definatley see the VanGough museum/Rijksmuseum, have a walk through the red light district and go to the Anne Franke house in that amount of time. I know there's a ton of other stuff to do, but those were what I found to do and could have easily condensed it to an afternoon. bigger question though: what are the times of your layover, that will definitely effect your choices as far as things to do (night/day)

On June 18, I get into AMS at 10 am after a 4 hr KLM flight from IST. The previous day will be exhausting and so during my 6 hour layover, I simply want to rest.

This is a NW WBC ticket but I simply did not look for anything like rooms to nap in the KLM lounges on previous visits. I remember some years ago going through ZRH that such were available in their first class lounge and I know about day rooms in places like ICN, but am drawing a blank on AMS.

I have been in the city several times and should return for another visit early in 2010 so rest in the key word for this stop.

Thanks.

You can lie down in the new "Quiet Room" in the KLM non-Schengen lounge.

There is also a newly-opened Yotel, but it's probably not worth bothering with seeing you have lounge access.

Luggage during Amsterdam Layover

I am flying KLM business class, and I also have a ~6 hour layover in Amsterdam. Are there lockers at the airport big enough for a roll-on suitcase, or maybe would KLM let me leave it in the Business Class lounge?

There are lockers of various sizes and they can accommodate your bag. See here.
