MXP security and hotel
Be aware there are NO airport hotels at Malpensa! Having always taken the train from MXP to Cardona Station, we didn't notice this until post 9/11 security required me to be at the airport at 5 am.
While changing my ticket the night before(Sabena had quit flying while I was in Milan) we asked the Tourist Office about a hotel and shuttle. Apparently there is only one motel and one hotel, and the AER Hotel should be avoided at all costs. $100, and just let me say there was black mold in the bathroom extending down two feet from the ceiling, and it's about a 45 minute drive from the terminal.
Security? While changing the ticket the night before, we left our rental car parked curbside for approximately 3 hours! When I asked how far ahead to arrive for the new flight, BA to LHR, they said 10 minutes, it's just right there, pointing. Well, because I was American, they did search my carryon.

Be warned. Malpensa is one hours drive from down town Milan. It will cost you over $100 in a taxi and thats about as cheap as it gets. Busy times I have known unsuspecting travellers pay over $200.
The shuttle bus is the best way to go and it goes direct to Central Station. There is a stack of hotels if you walk straight ahead of the station and then off to the left street, where the metro steps are.
Stay away from the Century Tower hotel, rip off.
Be aware when exhibitions are on they will bump up your rate in hotels knowing everyhthing is full, even if you have a wrtten confirmation of the rate. I have seen so many arguments over this practise I am amazed a front desk clerk has not been murdered.
Pick pockets are very fast here. When you have luggage to put into a taxi or onto a shuttle bus they will help you and be warned, they will have something off you before you know it.
Another scam is they load the bus with baggage so it goes into the hold of the bus, they leave the doors open. Its not uncommon for a thief to open the doors roadside and take whatever he wants.
I have also seen people get off the bus in Milan central to find there bags have gone.

There is a nice hotel less than 1000 m from the terminals, although the stupid mgmt does not run a shuttle after 11:30 am. Perfect if you have a rental car.
