G8 summit in Evian
For those planning to drive through the Geneva area in late May-early June, be advised that while the G8 summit in Evian is scheduled June 1-3, the Swiss-French border in the Geneva canton will be heavily filtered starting May 22.
Locals have been told to expect:
- unguarded border crossings will be closed
- every single car will be inspected at the open crossings
- very long backups, especially on the highway between the airport and the French border
- plenty of demonstrations in town, more violent than the Swiss norm
I'm hoping to be out of town that week...

Update, a week from the meeting:
- 3,000 demonstrators have already arrived. Many of them have pitched tents in the woods (on my usual cycling route
) and in city parks. Many more expected.
- all McDonald's in town have closed. One particularly exposed one has been fully dismantled.
- all baseball bats in Geneva are sold out, hopefully purchased for self-defense by residents, and not by hooligans.
I have enough food and water to last two weeks. The salads in the vegetable garden should be ripe soon
