Short connection in BUD?

I am trying to go from NYC to Tbilisi and looking for award possibilities for J to be comfortable for the long haul. One of the only options I'm seeing is JFK-BUD-IST-TBS for 70k booked through United, with a very short connection through BUD. I know it's a big risk. Is there any reason to think that a 45 min. connection in Budapest even has a chance of making it?

Thx

Sounds like it's all on one itinerary/ticket, which they wouldn't sell if it was invalid.

This being the case, if you missed the connection, they would put you on the next flight. There appear to be 3 flights a day BUD-IST and IST-TBS, so as long as the arrival time of the next flight is also acceptable I'd go ahead and book it.

I'll be experiencing BUD (airport) for the first time tomorrow so can report on the practical aspects of transiting there after, but maybe someone else will chime in first.

My guess is you'll be ok......

If you coming in on the LOT non-stop from JFK, you'll arrive in Terminal 2A in Franz Liszt Airport. Assuming you're on to Istanbul via Turkish Air, that also goes out of Terminal 2A. You might have an issue if you're flying Pegasus Air to Istanbul, as they fly out of Terminal 2B, but I highly doubt you're doing that if you're booking thru United.

Since you're in-transit, you'll not need to clear EU Schengen Immigration @ Budapest.

Thank you both! Yes, it's one ticket so I can fallback on a later flight if I have to (which is the other reason I'm considering it - my other options are 2 separate tickets, which gives me no recourse for problems) and it is LOT to Turkish, so sounds like both 2a. And yes - please let me know how it goes in BUD tomorrow.

Thx again!

This connection in BUD is doable. It's all non-schengen so quick security is all that will be required, assuming you can get all your BPs in JFK.

Is security required when arriving from the US? It isn't at many Schengen airports

Schengen->non-Schengen is easy, no security, just walk to the non-Schengen end of the terminal to pass immigration.

non-Schengen->Schengen is tricky. The airport is totally unprepared for that. They have no immigration booths airside facing non-Schengen - I had to talk my way thru with the exit booth officer.
BUD is not really a transit airport, so transit security is usually empty. Once I did it, they actually had to bring in the neccessary staff to go thru (I think regulations say there must be 3 screeners present, there was only one manning the machine).

having said that, I never did a non-Schengen-non-Schengen transit there.

It's usually easier just to go landside and back, but with 45 mins connection time it's no doable.
