i just purchased tickets to athens. do the atm's now work? i had read that athens was so short on cash that the atms were not filled. i would get the euro when we transfer planes, but do not know if there are any atm's in lhr that dispense euro. just need money for daily stuff, not to pay for room or car.

AFAIK, ATMs in Greece were not filled for only one or two days. Any restrictions applied only to Greek cards.
I was there 3 weeks ago and bought a few thousand euros with my UK cards at ATMs. I recall a sign saying Greek cards were limited to withdrawal of ~400 euros per day.

ATMs are limited to 420 Euro per week per account for Greek accounts. Other than the first couple of days, or so, after the capital controls went into effect (July 12), machines were always filled, though with a limit of 60 Euro per week. There was never a government-imposed limit on foreign cards, although I think that you were never allowed to get more than 200 Euro (or is it more?) per card per day. At least, that's what my bank has been doing for "safety reasons".
