Sticky situation w/ award on EY [misconnect at AUH questions]

Flying JFK-AUH-BOM on EY award (F) in few hours.

JFK-AUH is delayed by 1hr45mins reducing my connection time to 35mins. If it's a misconnect, next flight out of AUH to BOM is after 7.5hrs layover.

Published flightime is 12hr45mins on JFK-AUH. Acc to flightaware, flight often makes it there in approx 11.5hrs. Normally, I would have cribbed about less time in EY Apartment but this is a different situation. Would much, much rather be at final destination on-time.

Since my arrival and departure are from T1 in AUH. What are the chances I can make a tight connection?

1. Can I request a tarmac transfer as F passenger? If so, who do I call?

2. What are the chances agent at check-in desk will let me keep baggage tags for original flights?? I would take the chance for tight connection, if possible. In worst case, i misconnect and have 7.5hrs to deal with the crap of getting rebooked.

3. Also, next flight is on a 737 (yuck, who wants that). Minor point but as FTer, I had to point it out.

Suggestions?

You can make a tight connection at AUH. T1 and T3 are basically the same terminal. If the connection is possible but tight, they are likely to wait a few minutes for you (and other passengers on your flight).

However, there are too many unknowns at this point. The announced flight delay is likely to change, maybe in your favor and maybe not. Even if they tag your bags for the tight-connection flight, it doesn't mean you will make the flight. Basically, you don't know until you are in AUH. But check the current status of the incoming flight AUH-JFK, that is likely to be more informative than the announced delay for your flight.

If "tarmac transfer" means you bypass security, I don't think they will allow that. Also, your bags have to travel with you.

Many people who miss their connections have to wait 24 hours or go via an indirect route such as DEL. You are fortunate that BOM is a destination with multiple daily flights. <redacted>

AUH-JFK landed this morning on-time. I am not sure why is the outbound delayed. No notes on expertflyer either. The EY customer service called well after the A380 landed from AUH.

Yes, you are right. There are too many variables and there is no guarantee. I am just looking to take the chance. If the bags are tagged for a later flight, I have no option but to take a later flight.

Was there are delayed arrival on yesterday's service - i.e. could it be a crew delay due to a required rest period?

The BOM flight might also be delayed. It happens quite a bit. As an F passenger you will be treated the same as all other passengers. They will not do anything for you. You will be very unlikely to get an escort and they will probably only offer a food voucher at the transit desk and no hotel.

The transit hotel is closed for renovation so the only options are sleeping pods (T3) or a hotel in Abu Dhabi (Premier Inn being connected to the terminal). If it were me and I'd have the time, I'd ask for a later BOM flight (push as they need to get OK from supervisor) and spend the night in a hotel.

Also if you make the connection your bags are very unlikely to.

I would bring your connection to the attention of the Cabin Service Manager (head Flight Attendant)... Ask him or her if ground services help can be provided in AUH to help you make the connection.

Upon landing after JFK-AUH a few weeks ago EY had agents holding signs with pax names presumably for connecting flight help, and I saw a golf cart for some older F pax who needed mobility assistance.

So it's worth asking and seeing what they can do.

(Edited to add that you may want the mods to move this to the EY forum, as folks there may have more experience with treatment of tight/misconnecting F pax at AUH, and the fact that you're on an AA award should be irrelevant)

I would really really hope that as an F pax, EY is aware of your situation and is ready for you when you hit the ground? Surely? Can't be too hard to escort you through the transit security and then to your next gate?

The OP's flight appears to be in the air and scheduled to land 1hr 15 min before his next flight. So nothing more to see here.

And here's the answer to why the flight was delayed despite on time inbound a/c... It was a crew rest issue

Likely - But he is fairly likely to be bussed to the terminal due to lack of available gates so he may still disconnect.

Though this appears to be about an American Airlines AAdvantage award on Etihad, it's more about connecting in AUH / Abu Dhabi and Etihad's policies for tight or missed connections. For those reasons we will move this to the Etihad Guest forum for better input on connecting at AUH (where AA does not fly) and EY policies.

EK always have agents at the gate when an inbound is delayed and there are multiple connections. I would assume EY would do the same, no? Of course it depends on the destination. Flights to India can be held if there are a lot of connections, but as an example, certain flights to Sydney cannot be held, even if it means stranding 9 F passengers due to airport closing late at night. Sydney is not the only airport the ceases operations around midnight and I've never understood why some airlines schedule long hauls to arrive within 20-30 min of the airport closing. A recipe for a problem
