Etihad weighing hand carry two times at SFO

Recently went to BOM from SFO by Etihad Jet Airways flight. The flight was more than half empty but at check in at SFO the staff first weighed my hand carry and put a tag on it and wrote the weight behind the tag. At gate there was a weighing machine and every guest was asked to weigh their hand baggage as well as laptop bag again to make sure hand was 7kg or less and laptop bag was 4kg or less!! I have flown almost all airlines out of SFO and nobody weighs hand carry again at gate!! Whats up Etihad??

I've never had anyone weigh a carryon in the US. What are their published rules?

Seems like a good way to piss people off, frankly. Thanks for publicizing this poor behavior.

There restrictions on Coach are 7K. J & F are higher. It also says that laptops, books and other items you may use during the flight are allowed above the 7K.

7kg?

Scratch them off the list of possible airlines. Absurd, almost worse than European LCCs.

Wait till you learn about CZ and MU's limit of 5kg even in business!

What sounds absurd to you, 7kg allowance, is in fact a standard followed by many carriers, including:

CX http://www.cathaypacific.com/cx/en_A...n-baggage.html
SQ http://www.singaporeair.com/en_UK/tr...ge-allowances/
EK http://www.emirates.com/au/english/p...age_rules.aspx
QF http://www.qantas.com.au/travel/airl...age-allowances
QR http://www.qatarairways.com/global/en/baggage.page
TG http://www.thaiairways.com.au/en_TH/...ge_policy.page

In the next band up at 8kg: LH, AF, AZ, SK, AY and EL

I wonder how many of these airlines you'll suggest to scratch off the list.

7kg for hand baggage is standard allowance for many other international airlines, including Emirates, Singapore Airlines and Cathay Pacific. It's just a case of whether they choose to enforce the ruling.

Thanks for the list. I already knew to avoid Air New Zealand.

I noticed the same at DFW last week. 7 kg for carry on and 5 kg for laptop bag strictly enforced for coach pax. They had a weighing machine at the entrance to jet bridge and weighed everyone's carry on to ensure nothing was added after initial check in.

I do not recall seeing any other airline weighing bags at the jet bridge IME.

EY trying to come up with some revenue to make up for the xmas mistake fare?

BTW, about 25-30 years ago when weight of carry-on becoming an issue (before laptops), both BA and LH used to weigh all carry on bags at check-in and then again at the gate for borderline looking items (especially after they discovered that pax were adding items to carry on after check-in)

I had more than 60 Y flights with Etihad and never experienced something like this. the most recent one was yesterday.

Furthermore do I usually have one cabin trolley and a laptop or camera bag with me. Seems strange. Did they had any issues with the overhead bins?

Most likely the plane was heavily loaded with cargo and they wanted to keep an eye on weight to ensure the plane would have sufficient fuel

This story alarms me. I'm thinking of booking more travel on Etihad but this aspect is very unappealing to a North American based traveler.

I asked the agent similar question to that effect and she told us that her supervisor had instructed everyone working at the counters to follow the corporate policy in strict enforcement of carry on weight and it is not related to load. She also indicated that this was not a one time thing. Overzealous station staff?

I also noticed First/Business class check in counter agent was asking the customers to put their carry-ons on the scale as well. So this may not be limited to Y pax only.

Agent informed that the charge will be $175 if it is overweight at the gate. Scary tactic IMO.

People with connections from a different airline and not visiting check in counters are in for a shocker.

FYI, here's the link to Etihad's baggage page -- http://www.etihad.com/en/before-you-...ge-allowances/

Hand baggage (carry-on) allowance

Each item must not exceed dimensions of 111 cm (40 x 50 x 21).

When an infant is carried in either a carrycot or car seat, the following items may be carried free of charge provided the total weight (excluding the infant) does not exceed 5kg: bedding, napkins, feeding bottles and sufficient food for the journey.

FLIGHTS All destinations
FIRST CLASS 2 bags total of 12kg
BUSINESS CLASS 2 bags total of 12kg
ECONOMY CLASS 1 bag up to 7kg
INFANT 1 bag up to 5kg
