upgrading a ticket

my friend has a return ticket from hkg to amm via dxb bought by the very ungenerous company, in Economy. How difficult would it be for him to add some of his own money and upgrade it to business class? Ive never been lucky enough to have had a ticket bought by someone else. Alternatively, is it possible to buy upgrades at the gate, as it is with TG and UA? In that case he would only bother with hkg-dxb and dxb-hkg. Thanks.

This seems to be more of a company issue than an airline issue, I think. EK will allow you to upgrade the ticket by paying a fare difference (which can be done by phoning reservations) but I am not sure if the employer will allow that. Generally, EK doesn't offer paid upgrades at check-in but they have offered it on occasion so it doesn't hurt to ask

Cheers
