Upgrades only for Plat?

Upgrades only for Plat?
First time I've seen this - but it could just be me. Me and my wife have a flight - separate bookings though. The return leg is wide open so we booked her in Y with the plan to upgrade her using miles.
I could see the upgrade (for both legs) from my account (Plat) but she showed no availability on hers (Gold). I swear this is the first time I've seen / heard about this.
I contacted EK twice and was told I'm entitled to "extra benefits" as Plat - but they refused to unlock the seats and upgrade with her miles, would only use mine. Is that not the most ridiculous policy ever - she gets the same upgrade, but they won't take it from her account. The mind boggles.

Agree, I just wish they would allow my wife to use her miles as my linked Gold - same seat, same ticket, upgrade to the same person, computer says no, manually applying this would avoid the inconvenience and be a true benefit
