Date change on an upgrade

Can someone help me with the possible scenario here?

I have purchased an eco flex ticket, multi city one way, upgrading the 2nd leg with points to business in Dec 2022.
Say for example I had to change dates, can they pick new dates based on my existing class of travel OR will they 'return' the points?
The spanner here is that the points were expiring by the end of June 2022 - so does that mean I will my points which I used to upgrade (as if they 'return' the points it will have attributed the same expiry date right?)

It's a bit of a process, but what you should do is find a travel date which has award availability for the leg that you have the existing upgrade for. You should then be able to change the date (subject to your fare conditions and any Covid relaxations which depend on when you bought the ticket). And I THINK (but do not know) that they might 'transfer' the upgrade to the new flight without first returning the points to your account.
If they return the points, you loose them as they will have the old expiration date (as you also say).
If this all works, I simply do not know, its a complicated issue.
Good luck.

Thanks, yes I am hoping to find an alternative date but wont know if I need to until closer to the time.
If the availability is there I am hoping the customer service agent can switch dates as its a flex ticket there shouldn't be any admin fees applicable

I done this - they didn't return my points. Which is super strange... i was told they do return the points (even by a ek agent)
They just swapped my ticket over to another business class flight (obviously there was a award upgrade available the date i chose)

I booked a flex ticket too - they still wanted to charge $100 per person though .......

Ive done this a couple of times, they basically must do the following:
  • return the miles first (downgrade you)
  • rebook you to your new flight on your original booked class
  • Use the miles from your account (upgrade you) again
to be transparent Ive never been in that same situation youre in; however from my experience, returning the miles tends to give them a different expiration date (not sure if its by design or just a glitch). I never had to count on it though, so I never gave it much thought.

best thing to do is contact their call centre and see what they tell you.

best of luck!

thanks, currently booked (flex) for December but dependant on one thing which I will only find out approx early December
In the worst case scenario I can rebook my ticket to another date without admin fees - however the already upgraded seats might be at risk (if they 'refund; the points and equally the points expiry date do not get 'refreshed/renewed')
hopefully on the telephone they can understand the request and just re-allocate (will pick a date with seats as I am flexible) however not put in this scenario yet. its good to get a second opinion. I will assume the worst case (would be a shame to lose those points) and the bonus would be for simple re-allocation of award seat to another date
