EK15 diverted

Looking at the FR24 data it’s had 2 attempts landing at LGW and is now having a go at MAN instead. A bit windy down there today?

Emirates #EK15 diverted to Manchester after it declared an emergency due to low fuel.

But they squawked 7700 indicating an emergency. Maybe a mechanical issue which meant the winds at LGW were also prohibitive. Flight controls etc. Normal final approach speed so flaps probably fine. Could also be an engine failure so reduced crosswind performance (and if one of the two onboard engines no reverse thrist available so reduced braking and risk of brake fire since the A380 has the brakes of a used 1995 Opel Astra)

Hm, surprised low fuel would be squawk 7700, and that they'd be low given planned diversion fuel. Usually low fuel is first declared as a PAN-PAN before it becomes a full blown Mayday

I guess it's "procedure" to squawk 7700 in this situation. Isn't the normal extra fuelling enough for 2 go arounds and a diversion?

It depends on ATC - they can instruct an aircraft to not squawk 7700

Lot's of go arounds today, and of course people i.e. the media are making a big deal about it to the point where the UKCAA twitter account had to post about it... smh

EK29 today, no go arounds but a long holding pattern followed by a very hard landing.

There was a crash, IIRC at JFK involving a foreign carrier, where an arriving aircraft was in a holding pattern and ran out of fuel. Part of the problem was that the pilots failed to declare an emergency as that would have caused ATC to give them priority to land immediately.

MAN is the designated diversion airport usually for LON flights for EK so they have to go to secondary they can't choose where to land
