Getting F - is there a work around?

Currently booked on flights TUN-DXB, DXB-BKK (stopover) then BKK - SYD

Originally an economy flex+ outbound, business flex return, however I have upgraded all outbound segments to J with miles.

TUN-DXB, DXB-BKK and BKK-SYD are all showing D available and the first and last segment are showing Z available (DXB-BKK is a 2 class). I was hoping to cancel my miles, purchase D and then upgrade with miles to F. However I have called and the agent says they can only price me a business flex outbound?

J is wide open on all the flights so chances of an Op-up is 0.

Any suggestions?

You cant buy D, its an award / upgrade bucket.
The lowest business bucket you can buy is O, known as J Saver. That (assuming it is available, which on most routes is not often the case), can be upgraded with miles (assuming Z is available). There is also P, but this is the bucket used for online or OLCI upgrade offers to business class and also is not sold normally

Learn something new everyday, I have always associated D with savers I have purchased in the past.

Either way these are the flight loads, I specifically asked what segment is making it a flex and the lady on the phone said the first sector. I am not sure how to check the BKK-SYD as part of the same fair but checking it individually it is also wide open.

The individual loads are kind of meaningless due to married segment logic. The Availability for TUN-DXB on its own may be different to TUN-DXB-BKK.

Furthermore there are fare rules to consider, a Saver fare might not permit a stopover in BKK or at least not for free.

I did a dummy booking for TUN-DXB and it still only offered flex.

TUN-DXB might not have Saver available, even though TUN-SYD might. there are also advance purchase, minimum stay and other considerations

No I mean EF is showing TUN-DXB as saver available on EF yet when you try to book TUN-DXB (not SYD) it only allows flex. Its now irrelevant, I just mention the point as it questions the reliability of EF. I have already realised their upgrades alert is useless and last year I was able to upgrade over the phone on dates EF were showing no availability.

Any way on a positive note I have a window seat and the seat next to me remains empty, the wine list is rubbish though.

There have been some reports recently of EF being in accurate with Saver availability, however still, were you entering a return date into EF, point of sale? There are legitimate reasons why even though the flight in principle might have O available for some configuration of parameters it won't price in O when you search on EK website. Even if EF shows O available for example, for a flight tomorrow, if the published O fares require 7 day advance purchase you would be unable to ticket it.

I take back what I said. From the flight load I showed earlier the flight is now full in F and J is full.

riddle me this.. there was only one person flying F - the purser confirmed this.

I am on a economy flex + which once upgraded I thought showed as a business flex+ and I am Gold. Like my previous 3 flights out of Tunis in J I am the only one to be greeted as Gold. It's highly unlikely that this flight has an abundance of plats and other golds...

I am never one to complain about Op-ups, after all you get what you pay for and I have never received one however being annoyed in this situation is an understatement!
