Seat map looked completely empty in Y earlier this morning and is now showing as completely full which reinforces the fact that it is a very unreliable way of knowing how busy a flight really is.

The upgrade Gods are certainly looking favourably upon you Lkaroo :D

I'm not sure. It's very confusing. This morning on EK525 i wasn't upgraded on a saver award ticket, others were. If rules had changed i would almost certainly been in the top 5 or so by status for that route (and also didn't notice anyone else getting a greeting near me in Y which sort of indicates lack of status pax). Just my bad luck I guess

Skywardhunter, I know people reported that they have received upgrades on award tickets in the past but I was told by an agent before the rule change that you wouldn't be eligible an op-up on a ticket you had upgraded with miles which I guess would appear as an award ticket. So I don't know either.

And Saltire, yes, I've been very lucky of late but after the rules changed I didn't receive an upgrade for months.

Not sure if this helps (or if it relates directly to what you're talking about).

On two occasions before the rule change, I had used miles to upgrade from a purchased Economy ticket to Business, and then received upgrades to First.

Last week a friend purchased a Y ticket, used miles to upgrade to Business and then was upgraded to First. (Dubai to Bangkok)

As a further data point, I got upgraded from J-F from Tokyo to Dubai earlier last week. Granted, it was a J flex ticket but I was told at check in that I was first on the upgrade list. From experience, there are usually quite a few people on J flex plus tickets from Tokyo so again, I was a little surprised. Flight was showing as J0 Y0.

We were upgraded from Y to J on an award flight approx 2 years ago. Qantas Platinum and Silver members

I'm told that Platinums now officially skip the queue to the top of the upgrade list regardless of fare type (IT has finally got round to it).

Golds and Silvers are sorted by fare group first as before.

iOs of course do not bother with such things.
