It appears to me that mileage upgrades through MMB are always done for all passengers on the booking. There is even a 'warning' on the upgrade page to this effect. So I would expect that auto upgrade (which after all is initiated through MMB) would be treated the same way.
Therefore, without wanting to suggest this is a definitive response, my take is that it is an 'all or no-one' situation.

Thanks for the insight. That makes sense but leads me to more questions as I try to understand how this works.

1.The app and the web page state that an auto upgrade will only be processed between 30 days and 72 hours before a flight. Does this mean that if upgrades become available prior to the 30 days you could miss out to someone who hadn’t enabled auto upgrade?

2. It also states, as you said, that all passengers on the booking will be upgraded and miles will be deducted from your account. In my case my wife and I both have enough miles for an individual upgrade but neither of us have enough miles for the 2 upgrades. What might happen in this case? Is the system smart enough to deduct the miles from each passengers account rather than trying to deduct them all from one account?

I would suspect (1) is yes and (2) the system will try to take all the miles from the lead booker and the upgrade will fail.

Who has been succesfull with auto upgrade?q

I'm flying DXB-MEL in a week or so and I have enough miles to upgrade my flex+ ticket to Biz. i've selected the auto upgrade function but I haven't used this before. I've heard that sometimes reward seats become available before Emirates publishes them so I wonder if it's a good plan to just contact the chat help desk every day to check seats? -anyone have any experience with this?

thanks in advance.

It has worked for me.

But everytime I have used it I have wanted to upgrade two sectors. It has only upgraded one sector and then the second at a later date. It then does not then discount the savings as two sectors combined are normally less miles than two sectors individually.

A call to EK has always sorted it out and they have put it through as a combined sector upgrade .

I find EK staff in the US are more helpful than EK in DXB when calling to do this.

That is useful info! I have been wondering if this sort of 'retrospective combination' of two upgrades would work and it's good to know it does!

One thing you can do is to use ExpertFlyer - they have an excellent Award & Upgrade search. Simply search your route for the right class (Z for First upgrades, D for Business) and create an alert, it can e-mail you when things become available. Free for 7 days and USD 10 per month after, and you can turn it on and off subscription as you wish.

DXB-DUB flights in F are usually pretty empty since they put both flights to 3 tiers & mileage upgrades are often shown very early. I would be surprised if you couldn’t upgrade both of you.

(edit: apologies for posting in the wrong place. The result of searching for ‘automatic upgrade’ rather than ‘auto upgrade’!)
