did I do a stupid thing?

Booked a great C fare IAD-DXB, DXB-SIN and then SIN-IAD. Grabbed it and didn't really pay attention to the logistics. Just took a look and realized that on the return trip SIN-IAD I have a seven hour flight SIN-DXB, 1.5 hours layover (at 230 am!) in DXB, then 14 hours flight DXB-IAD. Pretty hefty penalty to change the ticket at this point to extend layover in DXB. Did I really screw up and should I suck up the change fee and hotel night in favor of a longer layover in DXB?

1.5 hours is enough for transit (maybe no duty free shopping and limited time in the lounge), if your flight to DXB is delayed and you miss your connection, they will rebook you to the next flight and pay a hotel (if it is more than 6h)

I'd definitely book at least one night in Dubai, especially if you've not been there before.

This is a pretty standard itinerary - you will make the connection just fine. You probably won't have time to do anything except go from gate to gate anyway. You'll be arriving just after the end of peak time in DXB.

Unless the error is you want to spend more time in Dubai....?

I will be spending a couple of days on business in Dubai on the out bound, then on to Singapore.

The stupid thing I did was to book the two flights coming back from SIN to IAD via DXB with a total of 21+ hours in the air with a quick 1.5 hour break a third of the way through.

as opposed to what? 21+ hours in the air with a long break in a city you already visited?

Hmm... you booked a "great C fare" that gets you from the point of departure to point of arrival in the least amount of time on an airline that's about as comfortable as you can get for that run. Your first post wonders if you really screwed up and your second says "The stupid thing I did was..."

It sounds as if you've thought it through and decided it it was a mistake. The verdict is in.

The post from the OP above clears up exactly what was stupid. And I agree... for that length of flight I always prefer to have an overnight break. Other people differ

Giving this thread a vague and meaningless title.

I'd say this is an ideal way to travel, especially if you're on the way home. If you were in Y, it would be a whole different story, but you're in J on a 380.

Ok - thanks - it was clearly not a useful question for this forum, but thanks for those who refrained from snark and made some good faith attempts at a response. I was mostly hoping to understand whether anyone had experience with linking two long haul trips on Emirates back to back and whether that made any sense. In the past, doing such types of trips )(e.g., ZRH-MEL via SIN) I managed a night between flights or at least a long layover with time for a shower and leg stretch and maybe even a snooze.

Let's just close out this dialog and move on to more important things.
