JFK to MXP - Offered upgrade from Econ to Business for $450 each passenger.

Good deal? Bad deal? Thoughts.

Only you can decide whether it is worth it for you

If the fare for business class at time of purchase was $450 extra for business class for that flight, would you have purchased business class or not

From that you can best determine whether it is worth it - don't consider the $450 in isolation, consider the toal price paid and decide

Well we got a steal on economy. Got an $850 package deal ($425 each person). So add in the $450 for each person and I'm still looking at an absolute steal.

Was this an upgrade offer by email? I would strongly advise you to read the small print attached to it, if so, as some of these offers do not entitle you to additional baggage allowance, chauffeur drive or lounge access!

That makes the evaluation 450 USD for onboard services only!

Yup those were the terms. Neither of those 3 things really appeals to me anyway. I'm not going to be lugging around ginormous bags across Italy.

If that's the case, go for it.

Yep ..... although not if it's a heavy case, because (as we've established) the offer doesn't include any additional baggage allowance

Alright I went for it. Emirates Business Class... let's see if it lives up to the hype.

For $450, its definitely worth to sample the hard product and given the horrible Y on the 777, a good way to spend some $s for a 6 hour odd flight in J. Don't get your hopes too high and you should be fine. Its a night flight so there isn't too much that you can do, but I would expect better levels of service given that most pax would be sleeping. And, the JFK lounge is great and you can have drinks + dinner there - note that it is open all day so if you have some time to kill, come a bit early and enjoy the views of the tarmac.

I do worry when I see words like 'hype' used by anyone unfamiliar with Emirates, if only because it makes me wonder a) what exactly has been heard/read and b) what exactly is expected ....!

In short I would echo jackiedada's comments above : it's a welcome opportunity to sample the product, at what seems a good price, but just don't set the bar too high.

Hopefully you can come back with some positive feedback, and you will see it as money well-spent.

Have a good trip ^

I actually don't think I get access to the lounge since it was a special deal for the upgrade. Could be wrong though, I'll check it again.

Right, I missed that. You might want to check if the lounge staff might allow you in or check with them if you can be at the lounge and request one of the pax coming in - most of the pax flying out of JFK has plenty of status so that shouldn't be a problem. The only fly in the ointment is that 202 departs around the same time as 206 which has far more numbers in J, so you might need to wait for a while before a solo traveler with status on 206 shows up.
