Reservation modification with Emirates

Booked a sale fare for two with Emirates and found out the next day that my friend could not make the trip due to work. Attempted to modify the reservation to a single flight and Emirates wants over 50% in addition to what I have already paid for the two flights. What happens if I keep the reservation unchanged and I attempt to check in without my friend?
Helpful feedback is very much appreciated! Thanks in advance for taking the time to read and reply.

Never, Never Buy a cheap promotional Air Fare or Prepaid Hotel stay unless you are 100% sure your can use it or have adequate Insurance to Cover potential losses.

The cheap promotional deals I figure are an assumable risk.
So far so good. For me that is ... some insurance companies aren't making money off me.
The one airfare I felt I had to change because of an extremely serious medical issue with a family member, the airline had mercy and waived the change fee.
When I'm traveling with someone else though, I sometimes do take out the insurance. More so I don't mess them up with a problem, but I figure the relationship is worth the cost of the insurance. When I'm on my own, I'll accept the hit if there is an issue.
I believe you got more accurate advice from wander9020 regarding your specific fare. I'm deleting some of my comments.

in other airline terms like SQ, its called GV2 promotions wherein both passengers must travel on the outward and inward sectors.
I had like that before on SQ ex SIN. The check in agent tried everything to over ride the system, the problem is the check in system wont accept because the other passenger needs to be checked in as well. The supervisor intervened but told me that if I can produce a medical certificate of my friend including the phone number of the doctor who issued such medical certificate, he can override the system then I'm good to go. I ended buying a new ticket, it cannot be upgraded to any fare class.
At least EK has the option to upgrade this fare with additional 50%? ( I will take it if Im the OP)
So , for these kind of promotions, be sure you are willing to take the risk.

BTW you cannot unlinked the reservation since the fare is calculated, conditions applied as two passengers. Unlinking a reservation is possible if the fare is calculated based on 1 passenger ( or fare conditions says minimum passenger is 1). Like 3 family in one reservation or PNR , if the husband decides to go home early, he can request the reservation to be unlinked, so that they can change his ticket only and not the other two.
