I've mostly had success with getting both myself and my wife wait listed for upgrades, though I do recall a couple of occasions as a Gold, when they couldn't put me on waitlist even though there were seats available on J. My guess is that if the flight looks like its getting sold out, then they might not allow waitlisting...

I did it on the phone (to DXB) twice, for several sectors. The one time I did it in the lounge was more a case of "Not available now. Come back in an hour to see if we can process your upgrade then. I'll make a note to hold it for you if it becomes available."
The ones I did on the phone all showed in MMB for weeks, but none of them ever came through. Although I did get a cash upgrade email and then an opup on one.

I have a question related to upgrades with points. Before my question, this is what is posted on EK's website:
My question is: if we are traveling in J on an award (D space), can we upgrade to F using points, and if so, does Z space need to be available? This assumes we are doing this at T24 or less.
There are four of us traveling, 2 in F and 2 in J and Z space hasn't been opening up in the last few days leading up to flights (researching via ExpertFlyer), so wondering if this is a viable alternative.
Any advice or thoughts appreciated!
Upgrades
- Upgrade rewards start from only 7,500 Miles
- Upgrade easily online from Economy to Business or from Business to First Class
- Upgrade on any type of ticket as late as six hours before departure*
- Instant upgrades available at check-in for all members and on board for Silver, Gold and Platinum members
- Spend Miles on upgrade rewards for family and friends

For F rewards "Z" bucket they need to be available as a paid J either saver or flex or a total reward ticket plus a load of taxes.

If seats are available in F after boarding, an on-board upgrade may be possible but never tried that.

I think it's fair otherwise you'll have people buying flex y and going to f.

This is my first year at Platinum. I am trying to book a first class flight using my miles as payment from AKL to DXB in June and have a wait listed flight since 1st March. I have been given a barrage of excuses as to the reasons why and been assured as a platinum skywards member it is on a priority wait list???. I called the EK call centre again this week and asked the agent for what availability there was on this routing. I was told that the first available seat was in October only. I checked again the loads on the 3 daily flights leaving AKL on the day I want to travel and on all flights the aircraft was less than half full and that the Z fare seat on all 3 flights had not yet been allocated. The agent also let it slip that it was more than likely that EK were only going to open this seat up at the last minute.
Does anyone have any advise as to what my next course of action could be, I have called customer affairs but told it has nothing to do with them and I have to wait. I seriously think the skywards program has gone downhill massively, as has the lack of loyalty pay back towards its premium passengers.

Kiwi, I fully agree. A few years ago, I could upgrade any flight any time. Now it's a massive hassle of being waitlisted for weeks, having to check online and/or call several times, and then not getting the upgrade anyway. Or getting it last minute, in the case of Y-J upgrades without the limo.
I'm relocating to South America this year, so no more EK for me. I was going to miss it, but the way it's going, I mind less and less.
