That is not entirely correct. There are other factors in play as well - what specifically is something that no one apart from EK knows fully. I know of a specific case on EK203 departing from DXB where there were 6 of us Plats in J and only 3 of us were upgraded to F. Another Fter was with me at the J lounge on that flight and he had already accrued more than 150K tier miles after his qualification on 1-Apr while I had accrued <50K. I was among the 3 to be upgraded before the F cabin became full. More info here (post #19 onwards).

For plats I have no idea. Maybe the load controller draws straws!

I guess it is all down to the whim of the load controllers at the end of the day...

Ozziebob, it could easily be the last 12 months' tier miles, like in your dashboard, to avoid a drop every time you qualify.

I also heard from crew that it's a combination of status, miles and ticket fare (flex before saver, paid tickets before awards etc.).

There is definitely some liberty where the load controller can decide. I was once upgraded at the gate, while talking to a colleague. He was on the return flight of his first EK trip, not even registered with Skywards. The agent asked whether we were travelling together, and promptly upgraded him too.

I'm guessing, but based on my own op-ups an a mere gold, I think that it may be the number of tier miles in the last year (12 or 13 months) irrespective of individual renewal month.

This actually fits in with my opups within the last year.... got a whole lot more closer to Sept when my Plat upgrade from Gold came up... but very few since then. As far as systems go, this is not really fair.

I remember in StarAlliance that they took your membership number as the older your number, the longer you have been with the program and the more chance of an opup. This would be a more fair system with EK

That may not be entirely fair as some folks who had registered with EK early on but never flew them until a year or so ago would have preference - not typical but still quite probable. Why not use tier miles accrued from enrollment till date - by far the best indicator of the kind of flying/ business one has contributed to EK?

In this scenario you could be giving the upgrades to someone who retired from serious flying several years ago, but has the points in the bag.

Good PR, but not good business if you're turning down the up and coming guy who could be flying with you for years if you treat him right.

it could be used as a variable but lifetime tier miles would be better....

Perhaps I was not clear. Actually, you wouldn't because if he retired from serious flying years ago, there is no way he could maintain status beyond 1 year.

So the rule is, op-ups processed by tier status always - iOs followed by Plats, followed by Golds, and then silvers. Within a given tier, its tier miles accrued from enrollment to date that decides who in a given tier gets the upgrade first.

Hey - I've never done any "serious flying" but I'm still Gold.

But you're right, status first then miles as you described, would minimise any issue.

If, by "tier miles accrued from enrollment to date", you mean all tier miles...ever... then that would be an interesting statistic to have in the dashboard

I will be in EK metal again on Monday and know the flight controller at the departure airport. I will ask to check what the situation is from their point of view

Please do post - I'll definitely be interested in knowing a load controller's 'perspective' on things.

it would, however its only what you've done in the last 12 months.

Unless I have totally misunderstood, jackiedada is saying that it counts from the day that you enrolled, not just this tier year.

Anyway, I will update on Monday when I talk to the controller
