I'm short 30,937 Tier Miles to get Plat until October and I didn't book my October flights yet, but it will only give me 21K (Western Europe Far East Asia in J), so I need so upgrades to J in the meantime... So I called Emirates today, and looked for paid upgrades to J for my upcoming travels and guess what ? There are some free seat (a few) in J but only on one leg of my outbound or inbound trips (NCE-DXB or DXB-HKG) but never all the way to HKG or back to NCE ! So I can't upgrade as the rule doesn't authorize per flight upgrades 
I'm on waiting lists... but with Summer travelers, it is not that easy !

I don't really understand your post -- what's the linkage between being 10K short of Platinum and not being able to upgrade the full itinerary during the summer? Are you saying that, because buying J won't get you to Plat, you would prefer to just buy Y and upgrade?
Another option is a mileage run. I am seeing NCE-MCT round-trip in biz for EUR 1,972 on 10/18-10/21. Seems like a great fare. This would get you what you need for Plat after your 21K trip and be a worthy vacation (although, living near Nice, you don't need to fly to go on vacation
).

What do you mean the rules don't authorise per flight upgrade. Ofcourse you can upgrade all the way NCE-HKG or just NCE-DXB or DXB-HKG

I meant that there is one J seat on DXB-HKG but the fligth is full on NCE-DXB (summertime) so I can't pay my upgrade on NCE-HKG... and the same for the return flight.

I can't fly Y to DXB, and then J to HKG.... the whole outbound flight has to be J, and the same for the inbound... no way to upgrade a leg, if the other is full.
