No, provided the passenger had "no expectation of" and "no entitlement to" an upgrade. [APD details]
Belfast is also exempt, if that helps, on flights to destinations over 2000 miles away, direct.
The whole APD tax is an undisguised money grab.

UK APD Query on EK?
I suggest taking Eurostar from London to Paris/Brussels and then EK from there.
Avios points can be used on Eurostar but you will have to transfer them to an avios.com account first.

Most (or all) of GBP74 would be eaten up getting to Paris vs departing from Gatwick

The cost of getting to Paris is going to eat up most of the APD savings but will still have to pay up the France departure taxes. There are GBP74 taxes ex CDG in business class vs GBP174 ex LHR or GBP148 ex LGW

I spent a while last night trying to source an EK flight out of a non-UK European airport I could get to using Easyjet from my local airport (and Dublin using Ryanair).
Not one of them got even close to tempting me to book.

I remember reading about how UK passengers on VS use Amsterdam as their start/finish point for flights and save.
So I did a comparison for the dates of my likely next trip to OZ, J to and fro BNE. I didnt compare individual flights for the convenience, or lack of, of their respective routes or departure/arrival times etc.
Currently, ex LHR the cheapest return shown is 4611. Ex AMS the cheapest return shown is 3217. That is an incredible saving. The flights to and fro LHR-AMS, a hotel, a decent dinner, a couple of bottles of wine and still a load of money in the wallet (depending upon what wine you actually drink!!).

If Paris was much cheaper due to other reasons then that could be a reason to start somewhere else, but Paris does not come across like that ime
The post implied, to me, that going to Paris was a good way to avoid the APD, but seems a trivial saving for a lot of money
There are definitely better places than UK to start for a better fare for business/1st travel , but not going to save mch on fare going ex PAris
Just looking at lowest fares to DEL, CDG seems about gBP30 more expensive on the base fare than LHR
As highlighted above, going ex AMS for a 1st class ticket can have huge savings just on fare and would definitely recommend that. Economy upgrading to business, then not worth it
