Upgrading to first

I'm on ek 18 on Sunday in flex j. Upgrade availability has vanished, what's the best thing to do? Wait until check in or call in advance?

There are still seats as the upgrade cost is Ł850 quid so I'd rather use my miles.

Frustrating.

Set up a seat alert on EF and sit back and see what happens. I recently booked SYD-BKK in flex Y and there was nothing available in J. Set up an alert on EF and then miraculously, a seat opened up 24 hrs later...

I'd watch the loads and then upgrade at check in...good luck

Upgrade at the airport. You will anyway get chauffeur and lounge access so you don't need it till you get onboard

And why would they want to charge you a change fee for an upgrade??

No idea but its was 50 quid with the ug fee being quite high. Anyway I'll enjoy ek 18 in the morning!

Perhaps the fee charged was just the fare difference between business and 1st and so any change fee applicable on the business class fare would be due rather than it being a special upgrade cost

Looking at MAN-DXB r/t fares, the fare difference to upgrade 1 way 1st class (A) from cheapest business (I) would seem to be about GBP610

This was Ł850. The j ticket (flex) was Ł3k (glad I didn't pick that bit up as that's too high for dxb return).

What's annoying is that there was seats to upgrade to but no ug availability. I rang emirates and they apologised and said everyone was complaining about lack of up grades then he quoted me 2k for a paid upgrade

To be fair (and this has never happened before) they rang me back and offered it me for 850 plus 50 I told him I wasn't paying the change fee and it was waived.

Lets see if I can get some pyjamas and an amenity kit

Definitely just sounds like a rebook into 1st class. What booking class are you now in? Z or A or P or F?

If it is a paid class, might want to make sure enrolled for this months miles accelerator bonuses if there are any

I have another question related to the thread title. I am on EK21 on 4th May, upgrade is available online from J to F for 32.5K miles but I do not want to waste them if it's not suites. How many more miles will it cost me once on board, assuming there are free seats?

As far as I can tell, EK21 is serviced by a 2-class aircraft only. Why dont you switch to EK17, which is an A380, that way you are definitely assured of F and then the upgrade would seem worth it (ie showers etc).

If you cant switch to the 17, switch to the 19, as this is a 777 with F availability.
