For me this is a sign of "he who is most indignant is guilty" type response but having had a good op-up success rate until then I dropped to zero for about five years until I got the lone one in Paris last year.

Sorry Mr T, wasn't aware that you were operating at the level of Sir Maurice. Anyway, he is gone now and who knows your luck might change as well. I would still write if I were you... (can't get any worse than your current situation, and best case, you get off the black list...)

just to understand: is EK upgrading only when the booked class is fully booked? or also randomly (e.g. a marketing management)?

Typically only when the booked class is oversold and there is space in the higher classes. Though a couple of members have reported getting upgrades when their booked class was not full - but this is extremely rare, more the exception.

Upgrade given Y to J
Location
Check in
EK020 9 July 2013
I also think I was chosen for an op up on the next flight EK3703.
My BP beeped twice after the initial beep when the staffer put it into the machine but the staffer didn't say anything.
The guy was surly and gave the impression that pax were interrupting his reveries so probably couldn't be bothered.
Also I boarded from the J class lounge in A concourse - he opened the gate at the very last minute. (Even though it said the flight was boarding for quite a while he told pax to go and sit down it wasn't boarding)
The flight wasn't illuminated either at the boarding gate........odd?

Seen several before mentioning that op-ups ex MAN are hard to come by - this one is a refreshing change.
