This is the kind of thing that really annoys me. The rules are there for a reason. There are far too many "discretionary gestures" made and as a consequence those of us who play by the rules are stuck with overflowing lounges.

I wouldn't go to the lounge with a guest in the first place knowing that the rules didn't permit it. I've skipped visiting the lounge on multiple occasions in the last year or so since the new guest rules came into effect.

At the end of the day we are talking about someone and their child and I really dont see how you could be so upset about it?
If EK did this for my family travelling alone they would end up getting more of my buisness.

If you went to the lounge (as a fare paying or card carrying guest) and couldn't get a seat, but later found out that many seats were taken by freeloaders, you would be upset/annoyed/put out and quite rightly too.
Just because it's a kid you get to put an emotional slant on it, whereas it shouldn't make any difference.

The same situation but expressed differently:

OK some are going to upset but would they be upset if that judgement call was slanted in their favor.

My point being that the judgement call could very easily adversely affect you, especially given how busy the lounges are at times.

The colour of your card, or the cabin you are travelling in, gives you certain privileges. If any of these are removed by an employee's judgement call then you would have every right to question it.

I will go just now to the nice restaurant in Al Manzil hotel (Courtyard) and will benefit from the 15% off deal of Opening Doors. But I've never used this in another place yet.
As a heavy Y flyer I am very happy with the gold status (lounge access, separate check-in, better service for sure and op-ups)!

It actually works. I pulled 2 upgrade seats last week for my wife and daughter (SIN-DXB-JFK) for mid December. No availability via EF or the Skywards site when I initially checked, but after speaking to the best agent I have probably encountered anywhere, she went off and spoke to a supervisor, who then released 2 J upgrade awards. Took all of maybe 20 mins on the phone (she handled the purchase of the Y seats, the upgrades, organised preferred seating and arranged chauffeur drive for both SIN and JFK).

However, for this ordinary Gold (me), the Indian call centre staff were totally inflexible and useless.
It's not what you know but who you know, I think. Isn't it Simon?
