You're over complicating things. You can buy the follow on tickets from the comfort of your own armchair at home, as long as you know the dates you want to travel. You don't have to be in-country to get the advantage of the lower prices.

@ eightblack

I'm enormously thankful for pointing me in the right direction but still unsure of how to go about it using EF...

This morning I've found this one-way MEL-KUL 22/08/2012:

2 Passengers, Economy, Skywards Flex Fare
AUD 1500.00 AUD 130.32 (TAX) AUD 1630.32 (TOTAL)

For that flight EF shows:

Business - Flex Award C 4
Business - Saver Award & Upgrade D 3

As can be seen, there are only three seats available to upgrade to. So if I purchase this fare and the extra miles needed to upgrade to business, would I then be able to immediately upgrade on-line to ensure we get them?

Is this how it works

Cheers ツ

That's exactly how it works.

I can also see the 3 x Award flights on EK409 on the EK site so it looks good.

My example is real. I was based in MEL. I relocated to SIN. I bought a ONE-WAY ticket to SIN (so I might not get the best deal on the one-way ticket, but not too bad). I then commence my round trip tickets from SIN (due to the fact that they are something of the order of 30-40% cheaper than MEL.

As long as I need to keep going back and forth (which I do), then it is fine.

Same applies if you do multiple trips to Europe. Your return leg will always be "open" if you get my meaning.
This post clears any confusion I had. Thank you.

OK... Tried to buy on-line but was referred to the Contact Centre.

Rang them, booked Economy Skywards Flex, purchased the top-up Skywards Miles for 30000 miles, upgraded to D - a total of AUD1945.32

Way to go guys... thank you very much for your assistance ^^
