UK miles question

Hey Ho Chaps - this saver/flex stuff is rotting my brain.

If I buy an economy fare from a travel agent/online for say £430, which would be £170 cheaper than buying it from EK on their website, can I use miles at the saver upgrade level to get an upgrade? Or do I have to buy the EK saver fare for £600 from EK? All thoughts welcome

You can upgrade from any fare. It'll just cost you more in miles to upgrade from a saver fare.

If you have the miles to burn, get the cheapest fare you can (But don"t forget about the YQ if upgrading an ex-UK leg).

There is no YQ

What is the case is that the UK Air Passenger Duty will be charged at the standard rate rather than the reduced rate. (Air passenger duty is listed on tax calculations as GB)

Assuming that your destination or 1st stopover is Dubai, then the APD due will rise from GBP60 to GBP120 ( if travel is before end of March) and from GBP65 to GBP130 otherwise and so you will have to pay this cost in addition to any mileage cost. If you are just connecting onward from Dubai within 24 hours, the APD rate may well be higher

I cannot see anything in the T&Cs that indicate that an unpublished fare cannot be upgraded, just that it must be an e-ticket

YQ is fuel surcharge, but as pointed out above, it's not applicable.

What travel agent are you using that's £170 cheaper on a £600 ticket?

I've come across some differences before but never that much.
