We are flying Auckland to Dubai in May and purchased our economy tickets in January with a wait list to purchase business class using our points. I have just been told that unless I am a gold member I probably want get the upgrade.
My question is, what is the point of have a points system if members can't use them. There doesn't appear to be any sector we can use to upgrade apart from return Brisbane to Auckland but I don't think it is worth it for just the final 3 hours.
Any suggestions on how to get our upgrade seats?

We did get our upgrade. We do have to travel a day earlier, which isn't a problem, but we are now flying business class. It also means a night in Dubai, but I don't mind that either. Just have to decide what I am going to do there, so many choices, and so little time...

Dubai accommodation
Hi thanks for your good wishes. We couldn't resist the good deal and booked a night at Raffles for around $300 NZ. We have booked to go up the Burj Khalifa at sunset. Apart from that we haven't planned anything. We did have a couple of days there 2 years ago and did the evening in the desert, and thoroughly enjoyed the 4-wheel driving in the dunes. So any suggestions gratefully accepted.
