does EK look at CO FF status?

I doubt it. Some would argue that they don't look at their own members status with any degree of consistency...
The way its supposed to work is by status and fare paid. I heard that tier miles YTD may also come into it, but I've never had that confirmed by anyone at EK.
Sounds like you got lucky. The only way to significantly increase your odds is to join Skywards and credit miles direct to EK.
Upgrades on the Asian and Middle Eastern carriers is far harder (IME) than it is on any of the US airlines. It is also very much route and load dependent.
