Upgrade to higher fare class

Just booked a ticket where the fare conditions said it can be upgraded to a higher fare class provided the conditions of the higher fare have been met. Then called EK to change to a different flight, on which the same fare class is not available. The EK agent said that the fare difference would still be payable. I thought tickets ex-DXB had free changes to any flight. This is a flex fare, and the conditions are the same. So this doesn't make any sense. Anyone care to explain?

My understanding of this is has always been that the difference in fares has to be collected (whether still in Y, or upgrading to J). The free changes are about no revalidation/re-issuing fees.

This sounds like the fare difference needs to be paid:

VOLUNTARY REVALIDATION BEFORE DEPARTURE OF THE FIRST TICKETED FLIGHT SEGMENT WILL BE SUBJECT TO ANY FARE DIFFERENCE APPLICABLE TO THE NEW DATE OF TRAVEL.
But this does not:

ANYTIME CHANGES PERMITTED FREE OF CHARGE. ------- REBOOKING / REISSUES ARE TO BE DONE BY THE THE ORIGINIAL ISSUING AGENT OR EK OFFICES ONLY. ---------- FARE CAN BE UPGRADED TO A HIGHER FARE TYPE FROM THE POINT OF ORIGIN PROVIDED THE CONDITIONS OF THE HIGHER FARE HAVE BEEN MET.

Does the new flight force you into a higher class or a lower one?

In this case, a higher one. The fare basis for both legs is 156.54TLE4MAE1, but I'm not sure what class that is.

I don't know anything about the ins and outs of the T&C, but sounds fair enough to me that if you're changing to a flight where you're travelling in a higher class you pay the difference. You could theoretically always choose another flight where you'd stay in the same class.

"T" class. It's the first letter after the fare amount I believe.
