Bringing an old thread back, just to know some info.

I just got an op-up to J class on a short flight, I'm wondering if I upgraded using miles say from Y to J, will I get an op-up to F?

That depends on the loads in J vs F. There are people who have received upgrades on redemptions and mileage upgrades, but I'd imagine they would do revenue pax before those who have done mileage upgrades. Whether they would do Gold mileage before Silver revenue, I don't know. It's not unheard of, but it's extremely unlikely!

Last year was travelling from AKL to BKK on Y ticket which I upgraded using miles to J. During Sydney layover nice lady in EK lounge came to me with a smile saying this is your new boarding pass and handed me F boarding pass. So yes it is happening.

You'll have to search hard I think, as we haven't seen dearbee on here in a while.

I do vaguely remember the story though - some guy who complained that EK wasn't op-uping his wife even though she'd sprained her toe. I think the consensus was that a credit card would solve his problems.

I'll fly SYD-BKK in two weeks and thought about upgrading Y to J but I think I'll just play roullette and see what's happening. I won't ask for upgrades because I don't really like doing that so I'll let you know how it goes.

On the way back I'm happy to try something else i.e. ask people at check-in, in the lounge and at the gate.

Really looking forward to my second flight with EK in Y (well, maybe not in Y)

Wome, one way to see how your chances are is to use ExpertFlyer and check the loads in Y on the day of travel.

If the seat map shows a fairly full flight 3-4 days out, then you'll be a good chance. The good thing with EF is that it lets you look at the seat map for all 3 classes, so you get a rough idea of flight load.

Dont be shy about asking. It's all in the way you do it. I always ask "what's the load looking like in economy...?"

Good luck. Let us know how you get on...

It must be me. I have never, ever had a single u/g from Emirates. In fact I am thinking of starting a "Never Been Upgraded" club/thread on FT

On the plus side, the purser always comes and gives me that ghastly "nice to see you again" speech. Usually prefaced by 30 seconds of awkward hovering, rifling up and down the printed passenger manifest, "oh yeah, 11J, here's another one" etc. If they're going to bother, does it have to be so utterly fake and cringeworthy?

Really??? I am amazed. What routes do you normally fly? It sounds like you're typically in J though - yes?

If you do start a "Never been upgraded" thread, I will ask all the EK regulars to rally around the cause and to help you book your next flight! We need to ensure you are in an oversold cabin...

It has to be frequency (or a lack of). Ung1, if you're flying 6 sectors a year in Y between probably the 2 worst city pairs in the EK network - then that's understandable (ie SIN-DXB-SIN). Worst as in very elite heavy - not uncommon to have 38 Golds in a 42 capacity J cabin.

Come on a flight with me from SIN to MEL. I can virtually guarantee a pleasant trip!

But groobs your lack of op-ups worries me! What sectors typically? Did you upset someone in a past life?

My routes tend to be either UK to Aus/NZ (always J), straight MAN-DXB's (half and half), or complex Far East multilegs which are often a combination of Y and J when the booking engine plays ball that is.

In life I tend to have no expectation at all of opups and view them as a gift from the gods. The BA gods have been kind to me twice, the EK gods never. I am always slightly taken aback by posters who have any 'expectation' of opups and I don't intend to torment myself with the expectation, but, the odd gift would be welcome - especially J to F!
