Transferring to El Al - whose baggage limits apply?
Hi,
My family will be flying SFO -> FRA on UA, then transferring to LY to TLV. The tickets are on separate itineraries (first leg is award travel). We are allowed 70 lbs each on UA (elite status), but apparently LY has a 44 lb limit for non-US routes. Two questions:

- Can we check our bags through from SFO to TLV even though the segments are booked separately?
- Is there any possibility El Al will allow more than 44lbs based on our journey originating on UA in SFO? Might they at least allow the 50lbs they'd allow were we originating on El Al in the US?

Bill,
1) If your luggage is cheked all the way at SFO LY will take whatever UA delivers to them no questions asked. I can't predict if UA can access your LY reservation and determine your final destination.
2) If you have to recheck your luggage you should be aware that the most consistent thing about ELAL is inconsistency. You are entitled to 44lbs, but you may be pleasantly supprised.

On the outbound flight, if UA can through-check your luggage then you will not have any problem.
On check-in at TLV you will have a problem as you will be allowed to take 20K per person on an LY flight to FRA.
By the way, the 20K (44 lbs) limit is not only by LY but by any airline on any route that is not to/from or within North America. When planning an itinerary to/from North America it is very important to keep all in one ticket just for the sake of the luggage limits.
And one more thing - the limit is 20K (44 lbs) per person, apart of 23K (50lbs) per piece, 2 pieces allowed on N. America flights (up to 46K or 100 lbs per person).
