1) How many points do you have as GL at the moment?
2) What routes do you fly mainly?
3) What frequency do you use these routes?
4) What class + ticket type do you normally purchase? (e.g Economy 'S') etc.
5) When is you rolling 12 months up? (i.e. When did you start accumulating the bulk of your current mileage balance)
Once i have these answers i can tell you the cheapest / quickest way to PL.
Finally flyingjeff Welcome to FT! ^

One way round your problem would be to do some mileage runs in the US on AA Domestic in FIRST as you can earn the following points which i think are considered 'Standard Points' and would enable you to hit the 5,000 mark at a much cheaper price.
0-500 miles (One-Way)
20 points
30 points
40 points
501-1500
30 points
45 points
60 points
1501-2500
40 points
60 points
80 points
If I'm wrong / misinformed, could someone else in the forum clarify.
Cheers

Hey Jonnye,
It's just the opposite. LY calls "basic points" the ones that you get from flying LY metal - and you can ONLY get them from flying LY metal, not from promotions (as you correctly stated) and not from other airline partners. Both of the later kind of points are always called "partner points" and never count for PL/GL status.
Remains to be seen what they'll do with the new AA codeshares. AA DOES give "elite qualifying miles" for its codeshares on other airlines' metal, as long as the ticket has the AA code. This is pretty much industry standard. You can pretty much count on LY screwing this up. Just watch. (I will be pleasantly surprised to be wrong. Actually, shocked - but happily shocked).

It's not quite LY 'metal', more LY TICKETS and FLIGHT NUMBERS. If you fly on an LY ticket with an LY flight number, it may be flown on an other airline's aircraft (their 'metal') and earn LY basic points'.

Are you sure, mikebg? I did one of these a couple of years ago and it came in a partner, not basic.

metal or LY code
Mike you are correct,
but you earn less BASE point on LY code flight in partner metal, than on LY metal for the same leg same class.

No you do not. LY to Europe (including Brussels) in D class gives 200 BASE points whether flown on LY metal or SN metal. Look at the quote I gave from my statement again.

I think that what "LYRep" meant was that if LY have an agreement with another airline then if you fly with that airline (not as an LY ticket and flight number) then you will earn LY points, but these are 'extra points'. I remember doing that years ago, I think with AA from London to New York. However, flying with an LY flight number and ticket on other metal will earn the same basic points as on LY metal.
