LY zig-zag - looking at 773

In today's paper it says LY is in its last stages of making a new fleet purchase plan. The main feature of the plan is to purchase new plane at a price of half a billion dollars. It also says they are looking at two options now. Either to purchase 3- 4 773 or make a mix 787/777 order.
They plan to get the new a/c in the next three years, but plan to make the purchase in the next three months.

How is LY going to make a mix 777/787 deal with "only" half a billion dollars. With list price of a 777-300ER being $250 -- 279 million and 787-8/9 being 157.0 -- 167.0/189.0 -- 200.0????

Along with this article ....
http://www.flightglobal.com/articles...pands-777.html

It looks like the plan is to replace 744 with 773, and have the 744 converted into freighters. I was told a while ago by a friend at LY that they plan to make a decision by the end of the year regarding the old 742 freighters. Some options were to either convert the pax 744 or to purchase or lease cargo 744.

I would not run into an conclusion so fast ... we are aware of LY tactics to use he press all the time to make it seem like they are always planning on upgrading and getting new fleets. We have been talking about LY ordering 787 for over three years now. We have heard LY planning to get rid of their 742 cargo fleet for over 4 years as well. Most of these announcements come from the reporter ZOHAR BLUMENKRANTZ from HA"ARETZ , who reported today on the new 773 acquisition.

The article wasnt specific enough and it didnt mention what type of 773 they are getting. i presume 773ER, but all the article states is that they plan on getting this time 773 which have a large ranger than 772. So I guess it is 773ER. I think this will be the first time LY gets GE engines for its a/c. I have pondered in the past the option of LY getting non ER 773, since i think the nonER still have enough range to fly TLV - JFK/LHR/BKK and HKG.

So from all the talk and rumors running around, it looks like LY is planning to :

Lease 787
Purchase 777 (773 would be wiser choice in the long run)
Convert 744 into freighters

I dont see how they will replace the 744 with 773? Thats a downgrade in capacity.

This new plan of theirs is looking more like the plan i had for LY that i wrote in a.net a few months ago ....

Initially replace 767 with 787-8 and 787-9 and replace 744 with 773.
In the second stage to replace 772 with 787-10 and more 773.

At some point to get 2 -3 748 or A380 for JFK and LHR.

One more time Zohar B. gets some info from LY and writes an article without any knowledge or research. He states in the article that apart from the 777-200 that LY have, they are now going for the 777-300 with longer range - the range of the 773ER is only slightly bigger than the 772ER LY have and much lower than the 772LR so if range is the factor for opening new nonstop markets, the 773 will give no benefit over the 772.

Well surely its going to have to be a mix? They need to replace the 757/767 fleet do they not? Or are they going to run them till they start falling apart like the 742's?

As to the list price, come on ly787 you don't really think they are going to pay anything close to that do you?

I hope they don't get rid of the Jumbo's altogether; it would be a great shame.
They could convert the 744's to cargo to replace the 74'2 (although who cares as long as we don't have to fly in these old birds anymore) and get some 748's hopefully.
Can't see them getting the A380 anytime soon.

Somehow, the thought of an LY A380 scares the crap out of me. Beyond that, its just "pas-nisht".

Besides the irrational element, ath A380 on TLV-JFK would end up with a downgrade in frequency. One of LY's strong points (for me at least) on TLV-JFK today is that if I miss a flight, I am only stuck for a few hours and never a whole day. If they flew the A380, it would probably be in the stead of at least 2 if not 3 flights per day. . . leave it to Izzy to pack 1,000 people into one of those whales. . .

. . . wait - that's it! That's what scares the crap out me about LY with an A380. Talk about packing it in . . . .

They ended up ordering 4 77E.
But with no engine choice. El AL mentioned they might transfer those order for 77W instead.
Now I am hearing again that they will order 787 soon, one of the oeing salemen were in TLV two weeks ago.

I agree your comments from LY. I think it would be put on order on operating 77W aircraft is perfect time to bring more capacity passengers. I think LY is considered to gets A380-900R series. It will need to bring more new long haul flight out of TLV. LY will able take the advantage of A380 is perfect more sizeable. I think it would be best time to get more options exercise orders to become 77W aircraft to bring more expandable new routes in USA.

The reason they wont order or you wont see any A380 soon, is due to the fact that TLV cannot handle A380... 8-(

There are talks about the new expension of TLV which might include support for A380.

Of course, because if they could handle it, LY would have placed an order by now I'm sure...
