I don't understand why ELAL can't buy Airbus while most US carriers have plenty of Airbus aircraft including:
United: 150 aircraft. US: 244 aircraft (only 74 from Boeing) Jetblue: 122 aircraft (no boeing aircraft) Delta: 158 aircraft Virgin America: Only Airbus Frontier: Only Airbus Spirit: Only Airbus So why can't ELAL have any too? The only resonable excuse is that maintaince and training is easier with all aircraft from one specific company (although intrestingly enough all the other major airlines seem to think differently). |

AA is also buying a ton of A320.
Given the amount of financial support by the US to Israel (and the lack thereof by the non-German EU)... Generally, sensible airlines like to keep things simple. LY operates small fleets of 747s, 777s, 767s, 757s (still?) and 737s. LY has to maintain separate parts inventories for 747s, 777s, 767s, 757s (even if they're "operated by" Sund'or), and 737s. Parts are expensive. Training is expensive. In 10 years, if LY was operating a fleet of 777s, 787s and 737s, their operating economics would improve. (I do think the 748 would be a good plane for LY, but it would basically rotate between New York, London and Paris)... But LY needs to think holistically. |
Small update:4X-EKM and EKR are now retrofitted with winglets. 4X-EKI is now the only LY 738 that doesn't have winglets.
4X-EKM has even El Al titles |

I agree it might be a good move from that perspective [B]LY777[/B,] but it's hardly exciting, and I think we would much rather hear about improvement to the product...
So far they just seem to be making it worse including the news today that they are taking away the advantage status passengers had in regards to advance seating, which is really a disgrace... :td: By the way, I wasn't having a go at you for posting (just in case you thought I was...) just commenting on the news... |

EL AL has no need for the A380. They had a bunch of orders for 787s (I believe 787-8s, though there might've been some for 787-9s,) but they shockingly and unexpectedly canceled those orders. Your guess is as good as our's why they canceled them. 787s would've been great for LY, and they could've gotten rid of their whole 767 fleet.
Regarding 748, I was (and still am) hoping to see some orders to replace the aging 744s. They could've had brand new planes, larger capacity, more fuel efficient, and could've installed new F and C seats, and new IFE systems. Instead, they're sticking to their guns with 744s, crappy F, crappy C, crappy IFE, no overhauls, a 16 year old 744 that they recently purchased (why, God likely doesn't know,) which doesn't even have F, no IFE in the nose for Y... I'd love to see 6 or more 748s, a couple more 772s (or maybe 773s to do the EWR route to have a consistent plane, as opposed to switching off between 772 and 744,) ad 787s as their wide-body fleet. All with AVOD, nose-to-tail power, true F, and competitive C. For the narrow-body fleet, they have a bunch of orders for 737-900ERs, so I can't fault them too much for that. And I must admit that they have the best C product for the narrow-body fleet, not like most European carriers (BA, LH, LX, to name a few) that simply block the middle seat, barely (if ever) have extra legroom, no IFE... |

Actually, I think EL AL should dump the existing 744 and 777 fleets and go with a combo of the A380 and A330 that boast up to date first and business class seats, the latest VOD systems, and mood lighting standardized across the two fleets. Given how large of a coup it would be for Airbus to have its planes make up the bulk of LY's long haul fleet, if LY had the right management team that possessed superior negotiating skills, they could attain the above order at an unheard of low price and completely revitalize the entire airline.

Actually El Al should develop it's own airplane....
