UA has had 777s & 747s diverted to SJC..

Yeah but later they were bound to SFO, not 7,000 miles away for Israel.

Even so.. A fully loaded 744 from SYD is fairly heavy...

A fully loaded 744 is always heavy no matter where it flies from. The trick is that after 15 hours in the air, the 744 only weighs half as much as at take-off. A 744 arriving from SYD with empty tanks can land in SJC with no problems, but a 744 with full tanks cannot take off from SJC bound for TLV.

Open jaw opportunity!

Seriously, we might as well be talking about an LY flying 787s from KUL to SJC. It is just as likely.

There was some mention of Sydney, but could they fly there from TLV without being allowed through Saudi airspace? Or Buenos Aires since there is a large Jewish population.

LY flies to BKK and BOM by flying down the length of the country, down the red sea and around the bottom of the Saudi peninsula before heading across the Indian Ocean. But when they fly to SYD they'll be serving pork since it'll have been declared kosher by the most mehadrin of authorities.

LY Insider: It would be really nice if there were a BWI or IAD non stop to TLV.

I agree. Let's wait to see if FAA will upgraded the category II status. If they will approved it
