Upgrades on El Al

So I am pretty sure I am going to book my flights to Israel on El Al. Flight LY104 YYZ-TLV, and Flight LY103 TLV-YYZ. Should I buy total economy and just stick it out in economy, or buy the Semi-Flexible economy and pray that something is free in business class? How much are upgrades to business on YYZ-TLV flights from total economy?

Just because something is free in C doesnt mean they will upgrade you.

Assuming you have no status with Matmid there would likely to be many passengers on the list before you.
Including Platinum, Gold, and Silver card holders, and those who bought fully flexible tickets.

Not to mention the fact that you need a minimum number of Matmid point earned in the past 12 months to be eligible for an upgrade.
Also, not all semi flexible ticket are eligible for last minute upgrades.

There are times when you can buy an on board upgrade but someone else here would probably know more then I about that

As clubman said, the chances of you getting a free upgrade to C, whatever fare bucket your Y ticket is in, are non-existent.

If there are free seats in C then, no matter what ticket you're holding, you can buy an onboard upgrade for $700 each way. You will need to contact the purser when you board, and I suggest boarding early so you can catch the available seats before anyone else (for that matter, before the pilots give them to their wives, kids and neighbors).
