You can buy it in the U.S. now! It's called Czechvar on this side of the pond.

Nothing "wrong" with either although Tecate's claim to fame dates from yesteryear, back when it came in steel cans, and was where the "Lime in Beer" started, to cover up the flavor of rust which was noticeable.

No one's mentioned Corona, the most popular import, but to old Border Hounds like me, a sort ofa subtle joke on Corona aficionados...

First, Corona was one of the two cheapest beers in Northeastern Mexico (along with almost undrinkable Cruz Blanca). The "painted" label was a hint, the cheapest possible approach back when all beer bottles were "refillable". Corona was held in about the same repute as were "generic" beers in the US.

There were no lime segments. Lime was reserved for Tecate.

Big markets....always available on one of the two big Mexican airlines, and in the "clubs' (brothels) in Border Towns along the Rio Bravo/Grande in the 6 ounce "Coronita" bottles.

It's really a decent beer, but hardly the stuff of any "best" list. For Mexican beers, generally pretty high in quality, my two choices remain Bohemia and Negra Modelo (but then I drink Shiner at home) and only draught beers when traveling (and maintain that beers nowhere approach the fresh - just into the keg yesterday - draughts available in the Czech Republic. No bottled beer matches the appeal of a fresh draught (Guinness being the most obvious example).

Who remembers the worst beer of all times, the famous Uncle Sam's contract Carling's Black Label "Jungle" brew, stabilized with enough formaldehyde to preserve a corpse?

Tecate is my favorite Mexican beer. I don't care for XX at all. XXX used to be excellent, but I haven't seen it in over 20 years.

Bohemia is my favorite from Mexico. A college friend who spent his high school years in Mexico City got me started on it. He always pronounced it "Bo - Amia", not "Bo-Heemia".

Grolsch.....?
Love it, it's about the only beer drunken in this part of Holland (Achterhoek) however the American import Grolsch, blegh.... it tastes different from the real one, more water like... (Same with Heineken in the US).

Best import beer?

I nominate Radeberger

See post #22 for mention of 2X. When they're out of it at my favorite Mexican restaurant, I will accept a Negra Modelo. I don't mind Corona, Carib, Pacifico or Kalik, but all are a little on the light side for my taste - best drunk after outdoor exertion on a hot day. I always thought Tecate was a cheap beer in Mexico - it tastes sour to me.

I'm guessing he pronounced it that way because that is the correct Spanish pronunciation; "H" isn't sounded out and "E" sounds closer to a long "A".

It's been available for at least 6 years in the USA. First time I saw it was in St. Louis.

My favorite imports are:

Westmalle Trippel
Chimay Cinq Cents
La Fin du monde

You do realize that at least in Mexico, XX has a substantially lower alcohol content than Corona, Pacifico, or Tecate? Waaaay too light for me. I'm not sure about what they import to the US. Maybe it's all the same here.

While in college near the Canadian border Molson was my beer of choice. After living in Mexico, Corona is my new number one.

I am getting thirsty reading this thread!
