To be honest based on your previous posts I don't think you are in a position to offer any comment on coffee culture in Australia because your opinion is so far off the mark.

As for your friends who you were visiting with not being able to show you a place to get coffee except Starbuck's I have no answer.....they weren't by any chance international students where they? Reason I ask is that the only people I ever saw at Starbuck's were international (usually from Asia) students.
I was trying to be nice and let this slide, but I didn't sit well with me.

" Instant coffee comprises 80% of total sales, with a value at $516 million, though this percentage is declining slowly. "

Obviously, I have no clue of what I'm talking about.

bensyd, before you exclude my opinion of coffee in Australia, perhaps you'd best do some reading. It seems that my opinion isn't off the mark after all or should I take your word over the Australia Coffee Traders Association.

I am willing to admit I am an SB person for a few reasons.

1- It's along my route when I run errands in the morning. No DD, no Panera, and I certainly do not purchase gas station coffee.
2- Whenever I'm in there, it's in and out. The Panera that's nearest to me, people are either chatting with the cashiers, or have no idea what to order, or need them to explain every little detail. Slightly aggravating.
3- I order black coffee. I'm not a latte or whatever kind of person. Any SB black coffee I've consumed there is consistent (whether it's consistently good or crap is up to the taster to interpret but I feel that it's good).
4- The SB store I go to does a percentage off of coffee close to it's expiration.

I have my personal thoughts about the perceived downturn that SB has experienced, most of which I will not divulge here but bottom line is I support SB, due to conveience and ease and I really could care less of what people say about that.

Those figures are correct and I don't doubt them. Unfortunately you need to a read a little further into them.

Most people at home will drink instant coffee, and most coffee is drunk at home. But as far as buying a cup of coffee that is rarely instant and in a coffee shop it would never be.

I hope the only reason to revive this 8 month old thread wasn't to pick fights with each other.

Please consider this a friendly reminder to play nice with others.

Not a Starbuck's fan and only rarely (convenience only) a customer, I do believe that the company has done more to improve the coffee served in the many cities I visit than any factor sine folks quit "boiling" coffee (just as the introduction of "Instant Coffee" was the worst day in the history of coffee drinking).

Sorry, but you're flip flopping entirely. I'm not sure if you've forgotten what you said, don't have the balls to own up to being wrong or whatever reason you might have, but you agreed with one of your fellow countrymen who said that I was a liar for saying that instant coffee dominated Australia's coffee culture. 80% of your coffee is instant. Remember how you said that you would be 'surprised' if it were different in the US? In the US it is 23%. Notice, 80% vs 23%. You were wrong. Clearly. Just plain wrong. I hope that you don't make other posts in various other threads that you might visit.

Correct
Care to back that up. You're the one who was asserting that instant coffee doesn't dominate the coffee market in Australia. I've only been to Australia once for a few weeks and I knew more about it than you. Pretty pathetic given that you live there. Should you actually think I don't know what I'm talking about, you can round up your buddies from earlier in the thread and put your heads together and come up with a reason of why.

Cannot find espresso - The other issue is that you are claiming you walked around those cities and couldn't find espresso. I don't believe you, no-one could possibly be that blind and personally I don't believe anyone could be stupid enough to think that instant coffee is australia's coffee culture. Put simply, you're lying.
I'm a liar. Right. You said that I would have to be stupid to think that instant coffee is Australia's coffee culture. It makes up for 80% of the consumption of coffee. That is the vast majority of it. Given that I have proven this to be the case, what would that make you?

The thread has run its course, unfortunately spoiled by a few.
