In related news. This morning's NYTimes had a full page ad placed by the corn producers. It was touting how HFCS is pretty much the same as sugar, has the same number of calories, etc. Funny how they didn't mention the metabolism thing. Has there been a flurry of news about HFCS recently? Something is making them blink.
WSJ quotes Center for Science in the Public Interest as saying that HFCS is essentially identical to sugar, and that Americans eat too much of both. |
For about the last year I have been really watching how I buy food. I started using Pioneer Organics, now Spud for fresh fruit and vegetable deliveries, buying local (Oregon) raised beef, chicken, lamb and pork, and I gave up HFCS, it must have taken me an extra 15 minutes in the grocery store the first couple of times reading ingredients, I was really surprised by how many things contain it and how hard it can be to find a suitable alternative product.
And I was very happy when our local Costco had the Mexican Coke, small bottles using cane sugar, it's a nice treat to have one very infrequently. If you get a chance to try Dry Soda's they are very good, cane sugar, lower calories, not too sweet. |
I have never found the Mexican Coke with real sugar up here in the Northeast. We have Mexican Coke sometimes, but it is made with corn syrup. But I have had the sugar stuff from the UK and France. Apparently I am in the small minority here, but I found I did not like the real sugar cola as much. To much of a sugar water taste - almost like a mix between diet and regular soda. I think good cola is as much about the spicy carmel taste than anything else.

IN texas you can get Mexican coke for $1 a bottle at many grocers :D
|
Do they still sell caffeine free Pepsi in the small bottle size (not cans or 2 liters)? They used to but then stopped, and cans go flat very fast when they are open and 2 liters are too big.

I go for the max caffeine variety myself. :) This is a local market/local bottler decision I believe, much like the real sugar Coke product. What is it with soda products and so many sizes?! |
Living in a border town I eat in Mexico at least once or twice a week.
Besides Coke you can get 7-UP (not sprite) made with sugar (in glass bottles) as well. I think it has a much smoother draw then Corn syrup sodas |
Passover is coming up, I'm gonna start looking for the real stuff :)

....And the nectar of the Gods, Dr. Pepper, bottled in the little plant in Dublin, Texas, bottles only, cane sugar, every now again, and alwys at the Dr. Pepper Museum in Waco.
10, 2 and 4! |

Pepsi Natural is currently available in SE Wisconsin. I think it does taste different compared to regular Pepsi, I wouldn't say better or worse, just different.

When did you go? We just got it in last week. When it comes to new products from the three major soda companies (Pepsi, Coke, and 7up), independent grocery stores and C-stores tend to have it first.
My salesmen always tell me what a pain it is to try to get a new product in the corporates, as opposed to us independents that can always rearrange our shelfs and coolers to try something new. |
