One of my great joys in traveling, sadly, is trying other countries soft drinks.

One interesting thing to note in the HFCS vs. sugar debate is the impact the two have on your body. They both have calories, but due to chemical compositions, real sugar will actually make you feel full from drinking it whereas HFCS will not. Now I wonder why we're seeing grade school kids with type 2 diabetes when this was previously unheard of....

i would hope so. compared to what i've gotten used to in europe, USA mass food seems so cheesy and low-quality.
US mass produced food is disgusting. Too many chemicals, too many preservatives. I cook most of my own food these days, including making my own salad dressings, etc. I read labels heavily and don't buy anything with preservatives, chemicals, etc. I might note that I feel much better since I started doing this. I've also switched my sweetener to Stevia. It's a natural herb sweetner. IT doesn't contain saccherine or aspertame. (I use this in my teas). |
Pocari Sweat and Calpis available in NYC

In addition to other reasons mentioned above, HFCS is much cheaper than sucrose thanks to US farm subsidies and protectionist sugar tariffs. One possible advantage to ethanol production driving up the price of corn, though, might be that sucrose becomes cheaper than HFCS.

Both of these (and others) are available in Japanese supermarkets in NYC. Calpico is served in several Japanese restaurants. I don't feel Pocari Sweat is anything special (compared to sport's drinks available in US).

But i believe once Passover is over (sometime this weekend) it will stop being available.

All Coke in this area is certified kosher. If you mean kosher for Passover Coke (i.e. made with sugar and not high fructose corn syrup) you should be able to find lots of it at any large grocery on the UWS, e.g. Fairway, Food Emporium, etc.

After mostly drinking D Coke for the last 15 yrs., one of those bottles made with sugar really tastes special to me.
|
Yesterday at Costco (in Portland) they were selling 24 packs of real sugar Coke for $18 (in 12 oz. glass bottles). It was imported from Mexico. This is new because It wasn't there last month.
