I cook most of my own food these days, including making my own salad dressings, etc. I read labels heavily and don't buy anything with preservatives, chemicals, etc. I might note that I feel much better since I started doing this. I've also switched my sweetener to Stevia. It's a natural herb sweetner. IT doesn't contain saccherine or aspertame. (I use this in my teas). - They dont have to declare if they use hydrogenated oils, which they do massively across the board. - Also lots of use of artifical colourings and flavours. - And many UK food and drink manufactuers create "low sugar" products that have artifical sweetners - but they dont declare that up front - you have to dig in the ingredients to find out: e.g. if you drink Pimms, you are sucking aspartame - and they dont tell you. Only saving grace is that the UK has lots of organic choices, so you can avoid the garbage. Continental Europe in general is somewhat better, but not always. Here in Norway it is just as bad as UK - you go in the store and all the dry goods in stores are chock full of bad stuff. And even worse the people are very unaware of the issues. So there is little market for alternate foods, very little choice of organics and so on. |

Coke with Sugar
Two places...either an Hispanic grocery store or the Hispanic food aisle of a larger grocery store. Even here Minnesota, there is Coke bottled in Mexico to be had in certain grocery stores. You might even discover another beverage you enjoy.

I know the OT was Coke, but I just bought Friday some Pepsi Retro in Monterey Mexico at the convenience store by the airport Hampton, CY and Fairfield Inn. This stuff is pretty good, all natural ingredients. Sells in plastic and 6 oz glass bottles. Bought some for father's (in-law actually) day. Hope that it sells in the U.S. soon.

Realize that NOT ALL Mexican Coca Cola is made with sugar. Wgen I was in Laredo, TX, recently, I paid the extra for a Mexican Coke in a real bottle and found that it was made with corn syrup.

Mr BL was so excited when he came home. He found Dr. Pepper made with real sugar (Imperial Sugar which used to be packaged in nearby Sugarland - no longer) and was in pure heaven after drinking a bottle. I rarely even drink a diet Coke anymore so just looked at him and smiled.

I drink Diet Coke here in the US, but I'm in Mexico a few times a year, and love getting Coke with real sugar.
Every once in a great while, I've bought Mexican coke at the Mexican produce stand (when I really needed a fix;)) |
I finally had the Imperial Dr. Pepper here in Austin several months ago, much better tasting! The chain Jason's Deli is working on eliminating HFCS from their foods, they have the sugar Dr. Pepper now.

In Morroco the cola was so much tastier. I just chalked it up to the heat.

In related news. This morning's NYTimes had a full page ad placed by the corn producers. It was touting how HFCS is pretty much the same as sugar, has the same number of calories, etc. Funny how they didn't mention the metabolism thing. Has there been a flurry of news about HFCS recently? Something is making them blink.

I suspect someday to read about how the spike in US obesity is completely related to the increase of HFCS in our foods. Cigarettes used to be touted by doctors. This health care provider avoids them at all costs. When I am out of the US I drink coke with sugar and enjoy. When I am in the US I prefer chemicals to HFCS. Both are dreadful. At least one is calorie free. :mad:

Here is a link to one of many articles about that nasty HFCS. It is in everything and I too avoid it at all cost. When I learned of the potential health risks associated with it and looked at the labels on all of my food I was horrified that it was in nearly everything in the cupboard-even ketchup!!! |
